I remember that too. It was during Matthew.

The center of circulation just passed overhead here about an hour ago. The rain is all in front of the storm, and the wind mostly behind the center.

Our house power dropped about 10 minutes ago, and the power at work dropped in one of the server rooms because of a generator failure. On the bright side, my home generator is working.

The funny thing is that our power company's web site, phone system, and VPN servers (don't ask) are all offline right now, so I can't even report our outage without the use of smoke signals or carrier pigeons! Right back to the 19th century.....

We got biblical amounts of rain. Wind was there but not hurricane strength. Power is out. Electric company threw up their hands and declared a multi-day event. Glad the gas cans are filled! We didn’t have much damage but my zed is trapped in a garage with a totally washed out driveway. First world problem. I’m thankful.

Sounds like the Northeast got hit much harder than Florida this time. Hopefully everyone is safe and sound. Best wishes for fast recovery. It’s a wonderful feeling when the powers comes back on.

I canít see where you are from my phone. Didnít get too much rain. It started at about 10:00 am in Nj and stopped by 12:30. Sun was shining by 1:30. Wind was wicked. I left work in NJ about 4;30. Wind threw my 5000+ pound vehicle around like a paper bag going over bridge to NY. My lovely tree lined block (think 100 year old big ass trees) looked like s war zone. Power still out. I wanted to put in a generator when I bought the house 2 years ago. Just sold it, will be out by September. I almost made it. FML. First thing I will do in new house is full house gas generator.

Watched live on the local news yesterday one of the roads in southern Maryland first get blocked by a huge fallen tree. Then the road got washed out by the adjacent river. The news crew was warning the drivers not to cross. After the tree was pulled out of the way, a few cars decided to go. The semis and trucks made it through fine. SUVs were iffy. But two idiots in sedans decided to make a go. One made it. The other got stuck. Wonder how that will work when the idiot files an insurance claim.

The same channel cut to a water rescue where they had to pull someone out of a car. I really wonder the level of intelligence of these people.

Lots of fallen trees in the area. Majority of the cars crushed are the ones who "permanently" have out of state plates but obviously live in the area. Good luck explaining that to the insurance company ya phonies. /karma

And my power is still out. Con Ed says maybe by 8:00 tonight. It's a good thing garbage comes Saturday, because I'll be emptying the refrigerator. FML!

Can we have some of your rain, PLEASE???

There is a forest/brush fire about 15 miles from my dad's cabin (AGAIN) and everybody's fire insurance got dropped last year.

I'm guessing the moisture in the brush is somewhere around -17%

Absolutely nuts. I would send all my rain/snow your way if possible. Best wishes to you and your family.

Why did everyone's fire insurance get dropped, cause the risk was too high to be insured? What about the people with mortgages - the banks didnt require fire insurance anymore?

Current policy: cancelled (due to risk probably)
New state-assigned risk policy - at least 10x the price, half the coverage.

When pops paid the previous premium, it was $5xx/6 months. New quote from some fly-by-night company we'd never heard of was literally $5,xxx with a $20k deductible. Mortgage is paid on the cabin.

Yikes Uncle Dub! Good luck man!

So we escaped the power outages last night, but power went out about 9:30am today... Eversource is saying it could be Tuesday before power is restored.

CT has 600,000+ without power, and Eversource says the damage is worse than Sandy in 2012...

We're going into our second night in the dark (sans full moon). Just gassed up the generator at 8:00 PM, and it should make it through 4:00 AM. What is that, $44/day for electricity (18 gallons)? Our power company is claiming that they will have 90% of their customers back online by 11:30 PM on Friday.

I'm not going to write anything about work other than saying that one of our server rooms is *still* offline with UPS/generator issues, because the thought makes my blood pressure rise to near normal.....

Still on generator here. I went down to get more gas and saw cones blocking the road 1/2 mile from here. Big old tree laying on the wires, sigh. Took out cable too. I’m guessing sometime over the weekend we’ll be restored. I have a good book or two in the meantime!

I believe it. I live in NorthEast CT and work down by the shore. It took me 2 hours instead of 1 to get to work the day after because so many trees were down. On the way home yesterday, and my way in today, things were not much better, and many of the roads that were blocked (even main roads) were still blocked today.

Still no power here, and no ETR from the power company. Just had to buy another 15 gallons of gasoline, so we are good until noon on Friday. It really sucks for rotating generator gasoline stores before they get stale when your primary cars are two battery electrics and a diesel pickup, hence not wanting to buy more than I need.

I'm starting to search for an old 50 HP VW Rabbit Diesel engine that still runs, to bolt up with a 4-pole generator head and build my own "portable" standby generator before the next storm hits us. It should be a bit more efficient than the gasoline generator, and we always have the heating oil tank on hand instead of lugging 5-gallon cans in an EV.....

You bring up an another interesting issue with power outages. What are you going to do when your primary car is an EV and your entire area is experiencing a power outage? So not only is the capacity of the power grid an important consideration with going all EV but also the resiliency of the power grid with natural disasters.
