Many drives are seen by the PC as "Local Drive" in "My computer", as if they were backup hard drives, not portable memory sticks. After inserting
the USB drive into your car and getting a message to update it, an error message then says to insert the USB drive, and you can't get past it. The solution is actually to use a USB drive that is recognized as "USB Drive" in "My computer". If it shows up as Local Drive, your car won't see it as a USB drive either. The solution is to get another USB drive. I believe it has something to do with windows compliance standards, whether your memory stick shows up as USB Drive or Local Drive.
Thanks for this. I will add to the 1st post

Hey guys,
I'm getting the USB error mentioned above when I plug into my car. However, you can see from my computer screen shot that it does show up as a "USB Drive", and not a hard drive. Any thoughts?

This is on a '16 535

So I think I figured out that the format was wrong on my drive. I just downloaded the free re-format program (link 2, #1 doesn't work).

However, all it looks like it did was wipe my USB. Doesn't look like FAT32 is an option

Free program on link 1 has been fixed. Didn't realize the webpage changed.

http://ridgecrop.co.uk/download/fat32format.zip

Personally I only use USB Flash drives.
This is what I use and it always works for loading maps https://www.amazon.com/Patriot-Super...tronics&sr=1-1

Your USB drive is 1 TB in size which to me is basically an internal drive in a USB enclosure. Not sure if it will work but you can try the application FAT32FORMAT & see if it makes a difference

Thanks for your help! I'm going to try it one more time on the 1TB flash drive. I'll report back if it finally works, but don't have high hopes.

I went ahead and ordered that 64GB drive that you use, and I'll have it Monday. Thanks for posting that link, as I was trying to search Amazon already for a FAT32 formatted flash drive that had a large enough capacity.

No problem. SO when you used Rufus, instead of Large FAT32 it formatted your 1TB drive as exFAT? or when you used Rufus, you did not get the option to select Large FAT32

When I used Rufus it let me select "Large FAT32", and I had it at exactly like your screenshots. I let the program run its course, and ended up with what you saw for formatting options above.

BadSeed just wanted to say thank you again! I got that flash drive in today & just successfully updated my maps to 2022-1!

I had to get a new FSC code generated because the 1st one that I had was done for 2021-1 maps. Now I'm good to go!
