Charging Malfunction

so while driving i got a charging malfunction error code on the dash. about a minute later i get a message that the engine temp is too high but when i check the gauge it's floating at around 200.

any ideas what the issue could be or how to trouble shoot? i'm hoping it's just a battery issue.

I don't know if it's a battery issue ... I'd probably check the coolant. It may need a flush service but I could wrong. This is the first thing that popped in my mind.

This is what I thought but you didn't mention anything about the power steering and I believe this car carries one belt so it should have been affected. In addition, you should check to find out why this happened. Just replacing the belt itself is a short term fix because whatever damaged the belt is going to do so again. I would assume one of the idler pulleys or the belt tensioner has failed.

everything seems in order. i actually had a friend of mine who's a tech at bmw check it out and he could find nothing wrong with the car outside of the belt failing.
