BMW keyed locking wheel lug stripped out
So how do you remove a fucked up BMW keyed locking wheel lug?
Took car to get my KW h.a.s. springs installed last week. They couldn’t get it level at the time even though all were lowered to their max (but was ½ inch too low on front left and 1/4" too low on left rear). They said to take it home and drive it - let the springs settle. So I did and took it back on Tuesday and in the process of them leveling it out they not only cross threaded and stripped out a regular lug on the left rear wheel but they also stripped out the key on the locking lug on left front wheel. They ordered a new key set and I just picked it up a couple hours ago. No way I was going to let these guys touch my car again after what they just did... Car is still ½ inch too low on front left. Screw them - I’ll adjust it myself... Well fuuuuck me... not only did they have ALL the lug nuts cranked on so tight (I had to use a 6 foot breaker bar to get loose - torqued waaaay beyond spec!) but the key lug face on left front lug was stripped out as well!! ... so now I can’t get the left front wheel off!! I mean seriously - what kind of a fucking hack does this sort of bullshit to brand new M car?!?! Thought I was taking to a reputable custom shop - guess I was wrong. I would not recommend Eurocharged in Cincinnati to do any work on our vehicles! Any tips on getting one of these off without damaging your wheel or taking it to get machined off? Ouch! Sorry about your luck man. I rarely trust any shop in Ohio to get it done right. I think Auto Assets in Powell Ohio is the only shop I would trust. (Never taken car there, but looks like a clean shop)
If you take this to any competent tire shop, they should be able to hammer this out. Be ready for a stripped wheel bolt though. I would buy an extra set of studs/bolts in case they strip it off and have it with you (which may be the only way off at this point).

They make a socket with teeth that grabs the keyed lugs and can take them off. Most reputable shops will have them.

Spec says 101 ft lbs of torque for lug bolts. I used a DeWalt DW292 (rated at 325 ft lbs) and could not budge any bolts loose. By my calculations the 6 ft breaker bar with about 60 to 75 lbs to break loose was 360 to 450 ft lbs. That's about 4 x over what spec is! ... That's just plain careless! I guess I should have my rotors inspected for damage.

Took left rear wheel off to inspect rotor (wheel where mechanic cross threaded lug bolt) and yep I have thread damage in one of the holes. Cannot run a bolt in without scouring and screwing up the threads on the bolt - and cannot run in by hand - need wrench. I doubt I can run a new thread tap to clean up and retain integrity. Looks like they owe me one rotor so far! Front left wheel still stuck - grrrr

The BMW keyed lugs have a shoulder that rotates - so cant use any sockets that grab - can't use 12 point socket and hammer trick on it either - will just spin.

Honestly shocked that a so called "Professional" garage can mess up something as simple as installing and removing lug nuts. If they can't remove and install a wheel without totally f*cking it up then they shouldn't be in business full stop.
I bet they used an impact gun to install all the bolts including the locking nuts which I pretty sure most manuals tell you not to do. |

Yep, they used an impact wrench and no torque stick. Total hacks!! Car is at BMW shop now. I'm guessing at least one hub maybe 2 will need to be replaced - repair bill is probably going to be in the thousands $$

Just picked up my car from BMW. Only one wheel hub was damaged - total cost to repair Eurocharged screw up is $861.13. At least not as much as I thought it was going to be. Will need to get left front wheel repainted as well as it got some scratches on it trying to get wheel lock off.
... But get this - Eurocharge now refuses to pay for the damages!! The owner Durrani - was a total dick! Said he shouldn't have to pay because he wasn't given chance to repair... WTF?? - you damage my car and you refuse to pay because I won't let you fix??? And he still refused to apologize - said he didn't have to since one of his guys already did (which I never heard)!!! Wow - what a major ass hole!! I will now start an all out assault on Eurocharged through Social Media (Facebook and Google). Will also file small claims suit next week after I get repair bill for wheel as well. ...and they just now ordered "Torque Sticks" for their impact wrenches. Wow- What a bunch of HACKS and LIARS!! That's no way to run a business that's for sure. Steer clear of these Clowns!!! Last edited by //MMachine; 12-28-2017 at 03:11 PM.. |

I wouldn't do the full out social media attack unless it's the last resort. Problem with small claims is, you're throwing more money into the problem. It at least costs hundreds to serve the company and to file paperwork. Just tell the owner to claim through his insurance. He does have insurance right?

I agree, people just let it go and don't hold them accountable.

By the way OP you should be contacting the BBB and also the automotive Bar. The BAR will open a case and pay a visit to the Eurocharged, based on their report which will be in your favor according to your side of the story, their report will also help you win the small claims case and recover your funds, and the funds for all of this nonsense you had to deal with after they damaged your car, easily 3x over what you paid for the repairs. |

Frankly I don't see why they're so resistant. $800 isn't an amount of E&O insurance claim for a company to drop your coverage. That's what I would do as a business owner knowing that I already lost the customer in my efforts to correct it myself, at least I can make sure I can make people whole and not have people pissed off at my negligence. It's about accountability man. I'm going to make sure my employees are accountable and that I am accountable
