To DP or not DP?

Hello - I hope everyone had a safe 4th of July.

I have a M6 convertible with 5700 miles, running the Mission Performance Stage 1 tune. I have the IPE Exhaust system, which I really like but I also have the VRSF downpipes, which I didn't install, and I had them for 7 months now.

I need some assistance with deciding if I should install these. There a numerous positives, but I don't know if the positives outweigh the negatives when it comes to the excessive wastegate rattle and exhaust smell, especially since I drive with the top down, 90% of the time.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

-Sebastian

I put gutted factory DPs on my Convertible and the sound is incredible. Of course, I don't have any exhaust or any other mods done so I feel like it's a drastic improvement.

I drive mine with the top down 100% of the time and you honestly can't smell the exhaust.

One of the major downsides that i hate is the CEL since I haven't gotten around to getting a tune just yet and the car won't pass inspection due to this...

I installed the DPs myself in about 4 hours, would have been much faster with an extra set of hands and if I read all the instructions before going through it...

I'm sure you've realized this, but it all comes down to whether you want Stage 2 and want more power. If you haven't already, I would suggest driving a car that is catless and decide if you can live with it; preferably a convertible in your case.

I installed DP’s for 2 days. I loved the power and exhaust note but I couldn’t daily it so I took mine off. A nice flash is plenty without your clutches burning ASAP.

I drive a gran coupe with no cats, no mufflers, and no resonators. With the windows up it’s no noticeable at all. The smell is only there if I’m revving at a stand still or in a confined space. I am also on a custom tune. Aside from the power the turbo whistle was worth it alone. People have pulled next to me and asked if it was a diesel lol

A catless convertible? That pretty much ensures you drive it with top up every time

Yep - I have the vert with the akra exhaust and I've thought about adding the AMS catted DPs. Would never go cattless given the smell as I keep the top down most of the time.

If you're in standstill traffic I would understand being bothered by the smell...

If you're driving, it's not noticeable until you come to a stop

Daily drive in Atlanta traffic so that means stop and go sometimes.

That makes sense... I have a 80 mile commute every day through houston so I only drive the F12 on nice days with no traffic

Yeah, I think I'll skip the install for right now. I'm pretty satisfied with the IPE Exhaust and the sound.

I will just concentrate on addressing the front bumper after the incident this weekend.

I also have a convertible Im thinking to put downpipes on. I have a few friends with F12 coupes and theirs sound soo bad ass. So im just wondering if there really will be an “awful” smell that would be bothersome...

I'm running gutted oem's, deleted resonators, and Eisenmann sport valve exhaust, stage 2 Mission Performance tune. The sound alone is absolutely insane. Being able to control the level of sound with the valves is priceless, and open/closed makes a huge difference in sound now. There is smell at a standstill with the windows down but not like a classic car smell, not as bad as i thought it would be. The car is just bananas now.

No. This car is extremely well insulated. with the windows up you don't hear much at all of what's going on outside of the car. Windows down it's not bad at all, if anything I keep chasing after making it louder but i'm good now.

I'm in the same boat... went for gutted OEM downpipes but it's still not deep enough for me.

is there going to be wastegate rattle if you just gutt the OEM downpipe? and what are the negatives besides rattle noise? Would any component wear faster?

I have no rattle of any kind on the gutted OEM's. It actually improves turbo life since you don't have as much back pressure or heat, only when you tune for more boost you are wearing down the turbos by over-working them.
