BMW no longer selling BMW 5w-30. It got replaced with 0w-30. In addition, after 2015 BMW switched from Castrol to Shell for supplying/making for BMW oil. In my opinion from my research you should either stick with BMW 0w-30 or you can try Pennzoil Euro 5w-40 (a bit hard to find but amazon has it). Since you're in CA and you don't see cold weather then the Pennzoil Euro 5w-40 makes the most sense. I live in the coldest state in the US, MN, so I will stick with BMW 0w-30. If you want to experiment with different brands at least get the oil that's BMW approved, LL-01. There are many reasons why you want the LL-01 approved oil. I'm too lazy to go into details. The shortest answer from me (opinion from my research) if you live in the hot weather you can try 5w-40, if you live in a cold area where you see temperature goes to sub zero then BMW 0w-30 maybe the best option. My Merc E63s has to use 0w-30 also but It used Mobil 1 , In cold climates having the right viscosity on cold starts can be crucial, if the oil is too thick it can’t reach the tight tolerance points on these engines.
I think I’m going to use Liquidmoly oil on my next oil change , I have heard good reviews, they actually have a fluorescent green color oil , if you think you might have a oil leak you can use a black light to find it . |

I purchase the F06/12/13 oil change kit from ECS and it comes with 9 bottles of BMW 5-30 motor oil, oil filter, and o-rings, etc.
