Oil question : 5w30 or 0w30?

I just saw in a post from another website the following info: BMW has replaced the 5W30 TwinPower oil with a BMW TwinPower 0W30 Synthetic, which is specifically designed and recommended for the newer turbo engine models. The 5W30 will remain for sale until stock runs out. The new 0W30 is also BMW LL-01 approved.

I've been using the 5w30 oil on my m6, has anyone switched to the 0w30?

it is only a minor difference for extremely cold environment. The "0" will have a lower viscosity at startup and flow easier in very cold weather as compared to the "5". In warmer climate there will not be a measurable difference. Once warmed up, they will perform the same.

If you life in a cold area „0“ is ok. Otherwise use 5W40 in warm conditions. The “40” cope better with the heat than the 30.

What oil/brand is the BMW twin turbo oil? I'm trying to figure out if switching to Castrol EDGE 5W-40 Advanced Full Synthetic Motor Oil or Liqui moly is worth it

BMW "branded" oil is "supposed-to be" Shell Oil. Shell paid for partnership with BMW up until 2022. So look for Shell/Pennzoil: https://www.shell.com/business-custo...-supplier.html

In 1999 Pennzoil's E&P business (known as PennzEnergy) was acquired by Oklahoma City-based Devon Energy and the business now known as the Pennzoil-Quaker State Company was purchased by Royal Dutch/Shell Group to form SOPUS—Shell Oil Products US.

Commercial automotive and motorcycle partnerships

Pennzoil is an official long-term recommended motor oil of all Fiat Chrysler Automobiles companies (including all of subsidiaries), BMW, Mini, Rolls-Royce, Hyundai, Chevrolet, Ford, Ferrari, Iveco and Opel for automobiles in United States. Pennzoil is also an official long-term recommended motorcycle engine oil of BMW Motorrad and Ducati for motorcycles in United States.

You’d be fine in SoCal with that oil. Always warm/hot there.
First number is oil’s viscosity at cold engine/engine off temperature. The lower this first number, the ‘thinner’ the oils. Don’t want a 10 or 15 weight oil for a morning start in Northern Maine in the winter.
Second number is viscosity/‘thickness’ at engines operating temperature.
In the older Porsche community we used 15-50 when I was in SoCal.

That oil was specific for the old M5/M6 E series with the naturally aspirated V10
Not sure why people love to screw their engine with this oil, it's not suggested in any single manual/workshop for the F series M5/M6
Some people have even reported engine problems after using 10W-60

I stick with what bmw suggest in their manual (0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40 and 5W-40 depending on model year and region)
