Rear glass rubber seal, need help

Hi

The rubber gasket/ seal around the rear windshield on my 650i (MY14) deteriorated which is normal givin age of the car. I used to replace this exact part on my previous BMWs with no issues and was straight forward.

To my surprise, when I looked into getting a new seal I was informed by the dealer that it's part of the rear windshield??? Ie in order to replace it, you guessed it, the entire glass has to be replaced. What on earth were BMW engineers smoking when they did this?

Just wondering if someone managed to get around this issue? I'm not gonna replace a perfectly good part to fix this. Any retrofit out there?

Thanks

They are correct. I read through the replacement instructions for the high brake lamp because sometimes those seals are attached to them. In the case of the F06 though it is attached to the rear window. There is also no separate part number for the window sealing lip on any of the part diagrams.

WTF, its time to start using some 303 rubber protectant. Of course, that is too late for your situation.

it's a combination of heat and direct sunlight. The windshield and side windows are ok despite being subjected to the same conditions. Sorry I need to update my location in the signature with current location which is Dubai UAE.

Yeah I have an f06 m6 grand coupe comp and recently replaced the seal around the front windshield glass however once I looked into the rear seal it also hit me that it was not a part which could be replaced without special ordering the full rear glass which includes the seal… really bad situation for all of us since these rubber seals are very bad quality when compared to other year and models … in short they fall apart prematurely… it starts with cracks then they just fall apart…

Do share your full journey ok this repair / replacement I have it on my list of todo as well…

As for the 3rd bar break light that has an open recall and I suspect that allows moisture and water vapor into our rigs causing leather cracking and damage however there may be other areas where vapor and moisture is seeping into our interior… any more intel from other members please share this is a great and delicate topic!

Not sure if this will apply to you since you're not in the USA. The recall is from BMW NA. You can try an internet/google search for BMW F06 M6 3rd Brake Light Recall or check your local BMW dealerships to see if the recall applies to your market:

Item Affected: EXTERIOR LIGHTING: BRAKE LIGHTS
Date Announced: 02/19/2020
Description of Recall:
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2014-2019 M6 Gran Coupe vehicles. The third brake light may become loose, possibly allowing the light to detach from the vehicle.
Action Need To Fix It:
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the third brake light and properly secure it with new fasteners. If the third brake light detached from the vehicle and is damaged, it will be replaced. All repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began April 17, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
