You are spot on, most people became familiar with the Cyclops from Stan Mott's illustrations in R&T. Mott was quite the illustrator, providing many for R&T, but was also an impressionist artist, and simply quite intelligent and creative. For example, this twist:

I think he had quite a few fans who enjoyed his humor, and thus built facsimiles of the Cyclops, which of course was intended as humor as well.
