I saw here on another post recently that someone had their third brake light fly off on the freeway and was asking if anyone had a link to where to get a replacement part. That's crazy.

Oh, and mine's affected as well. Best get it booked in then.

Looks like it's only the GC models.

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/202...0V094-7207.pdf
https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/202...0V094-3935.PDF

One doc says 2014-2019 and the other mentions 2016-2019. Couldn't locate the relevant SIB.

Ah, that makes sense. The GC brake light is on the roof and coupes and certs have light on the trunk.

Both docs say 2014-19

Yeah, I was looking at my coupe and wondering how that could be defective until I read the docs. In the second link, on page two under chronology it says 2016-2019, but conflicts with the previous portion of the document.

Mines in the recall. Not going to jump for the opportunity to go to a dealer that's for sure

Bought mine a week ahead of the recall as mine went flying off the window, struck the rear of the car pretty hard a few time and leapt to its death. Cost me 600 bux with expedited shipping. My son and I did the install in less than an hour.

You should go after BMW for reimbursement, plus you'll also want to do the recall when they get the new kits ready as they're going to be improving the fixing method so it can't happen again.

I am going to go to the dealership tomorrow to at a minimum get my money refunded. In the US the TREAD ACT covers owners for such situations and I was told this by BMW USA so I am pretty sure I'll be made whole there. I did have some paint scuffing on the trunk so I am going to see if they can do anything for the blemish.

Are owners that fall into the build date range checking their 3rd brake light to see if it is loose?

I hope they are because when this happened to me I was in the interstate and I suspect this is going to occur at or above 70 and it is a very unsettling sound and feeling.

You can get the plastic cover off the rear center headliner very easily. Remove that and the gently pull the ribbon cable from the module. Unbolt the module and check those two nuts. Then run your finger between the headliner and the roof to feel for the remaining nuts. You will feel a circular cutout for each bolt hole.

I wouldn't attempt to pull the aux brake light out because it can be a real pain in the Auxhole to get the rubber trim properly back into place.

Got mine done today. Was in and out of the dealer in under an hour, and that also included them doing a couple of other minor things for me, so it's a pretty straightforward fix.
