So the Vantage beats the M6 hands down then?

I mean it is the more prestigious car, right? Just like the Cayman is better than the 1M for the same reason.

The M6 will beat a V8V in terms of power, 560hp/500ft-lb versus Astons 420hp/326ft-lb, but yes the Aston is much more prestigious. I think they're both great cars I wouldn't feel as bad racking up high mileage on a BMW though.

They are two completely different cars for completely different markets. The M6 is the bmw king of the hill, and those that love bmw will envy it. The AM is for someone who cares about the prestige of the marque and the status that comes with it. With the M6, you get rediculous, over the top performance and a level of technology and luxury that can be appreciated, while in the AM, you get rediculous luxury and enough performance to not feel inadequate.

But, you understand that you cant buy a new AM for $30K and you wont see them on every street corner, but we cannot say that for BMWs, and regardless of our opinions on the Roundel, it will never have the status of an AM. It is certainly much more prestigious by any objective observer and no matter how much bmw trys to charge for its vehicles, it will never be able to attain the class level of AM, its just the way it is.

Now Im not sure where you're going with the Cayman/1M comparison, they are again very different cars, both have their strenghts and weaknesses. Neither are prestigious though from an objective point of view.

My point was simply that there are plenty of cars out there that are priced similarly to other cars where with one of them you get more bang for buck, and with the other you are paying a premium for the brand or image. GT500 vs. M3 is another example. Or GTR vs. 911 S. Or tons of others.

The more salient point was that someone who chooses a BMW over a comparably priced Porsche should be able to understand fairly easily why someone else might choose a BMW over a comparably priced Aston or Maserati.

I hear ya, but in this instance I don't think it's the same as one choosing a BMW over Porsche as I believe that they are more closely aligned in terms of market to be comparable.

I don't think it's the case with BMW vs an AM and certainly not against a Mas. One that is considering either marquees will not be enticed to BMW just because the costs may be similar, it's a different clientele. I think it to be opposite actually, now that the bmws are getting so expensive, some will look up market and that may impede sales. I would never spend 130k on a BMW, but I may spend 140k on a Mas for ex if I was to spend anywhere near this on a car, and I bet most others in this market would too.

Maybe so in your eyes, but there are plenty of folks who will take the Porsche for the cache and image irrespective of the fact that they could have a BMW for the same money with more powere. It is all the eye of the beholder.

And, in my experience, to the average person on the street, a Porsche comes off as the more exclusive up market car.

I still don't get why BMW didn't do a retractable hardtop for the new 6. I really hate that canvas top. Looks cheap.

Weight first and foremost, but also for status, usually its the opposite view, canvas roof is old money while hard top is considered nouveau to some:

Perhaps, but I would have preferred the hard top myself. I'll take the extra weight. I was really excited for the new M6, but I've decided to pass. The rear seats in my 335is e93 are more usable then the rear seats in the M6, and it's a larger car.

Not true at all, my cuz has the e93 m3 and the back seat is unusable by comparison to my m6. And the m6 doesnt need anymore weight so the had to draw the line

If you guys go to the link address you'll see 126J at the end of the web address. Change that to 136J and you'll get the 2013 M6 Configuration.

Correct! Have experience in both and concur. A well-made canvas top is the only way to go. Aside from the weight, the BIGGER issue is the overall size that a HT 6-er top would need to be. You would have nearly ZERO storage space with the top down.
