Realtime traffic updates subscription?

Hello,

I recently noticed that the Navigation system on my 2016 640i GC stopped receiving life traffic updates.

First, I suspected the software update, then I realized that the warranty has been expired (4 years). I called BMW NA and the service adviser told me that most likely I need a new subscription ($50/year).

I'm wondering, whether the "traffic updates subscription" is something recent?
My two previous cars (2003 E39 and 2010 E60) used to receive life traffic info many years after the warranty ended.

It's not that $50/year is a lot of money and the traffic info is very important - I can get much better navigation from my iPhone anyway. Still, it would be nice to have everything working in $100K car.

Any thoughts?

I had to purchase it a year ago when I purchased my 2016 640 as a CPO. Worth the $50 imo.

BTW, you can see when all the goodies expire through BMW Connected Drive or in your IDrive I believe.
