New M6 owner

Hi everyone! I'm a new owner of a beautiful 2015 M6 here in the UK. The weather here has been (predictably) awful since I picked her up in early January, so I'll try get some nice pics (that's my wonderful fiance hiding in the passenger seat) when it finally stops raining...

I've gone from a 2005 630i, to a 2014 640d, to my 1st BMW M car.
The car is a 2015, with approx 45000 miles. Shortly after taking ownership I had a Leeds based independant take a look at her. No major issues. However they did point out 2 things.

1. Non standard BMW coolant.
2. Unsure of what the last full service actually consisted of.

1. Yea...for some reason, it's some non-standard BMW clear coolant installed. I've advised the independant to do a flush out and restore with BMW approved coolant. A wise move? Or am I being paranoid? It's an overnight job apparantly, and I don't mind having it done. Is it a relatively straight forward task?

2. The service interval. The independent asked me to ask the dealer what the last service actually consisted of-somethings been cleared or ticked in the iDrive, but they aren't sure what was done. Oil change? Filters? Can't be sure, and the dealer is proving very hard to get hold of...

My responce? Full independant service anyway: oil change, filter changes, spark plugs, the works. Expensive, sure, but my mind is more at ease knowing its had a full service (despite having a....'service' very recently). Again, a wise move? I don't think, in any of my years of car ownership, I've EVER had the spark plugs changed!

Again, would folks aggree this is a wise, sound move? The car will do limited (approx 4K) miles in my ownership anyway, and will have a yeary oli change anyway too. Are spark plug changes a regular requirement? How often does the car 'ask' for new spark plugs, and would changing them every year be a sound idea anyway?

Oh and one last question. When gathering insurance quotes, the car came back as an 'M6 Competition', and a VIN number search reveals this too.
There are NO badges stating competition anywhere on the car. I thought the Competition moniker came with certain badges on the car denoting as such? The exhaust tips are finished in carbon fibre. Could someone please explain the 'competition' thing to me? I'm still learning all this BMW stuff!

Like I said, I'll try posting some niver pics when we have some decent weather. She's a stunning looking car!

Gorgeous car and if the CCB's are in good health you'll have many years of life on them. Also, you'll rarely ever have to clean the wheels except for your typical wet road debris. That said you will find that they are a bit noisy.

Many thanks! The CCBs are in great shape, and are very strong! This car drives very different to my 640d... That car was a big pussy cat till you wanted it to be a tiger. The M6 is a just a tiger. All the time.

I don't recall seeing badging on them but I do recall seeing it on M5's. That said, the ratio of M5 production to M6 production is vastly different. You have a lovely car that is well spec'd and wish you many miles of motoring fun with it. Looking forward to additional photos.

I'll get the anamorphic lens on it in summer!
I'm sure I've seen M6 Comps with badging on the interior by the cup holder? Could be wrong though. Yes it IS lovely, thanks again! These cars are so well spec'd (well, for their time) anyway. A lot of car! :-)

I feel like 2016 and 2017's I have seen badging especially the coupe. I ended up at a red light next to one near my home in Tampa, Fl and he said it was a 2016 comp and I am pretty sure it was badged.

The M6 Competition Edition had that. The car was basically a special colour and all of the M Performance options.

Congrats on the awesome M6!

Sounds like you're taking great care of it. Getting a full service and coolant flush at an independent shop is a smart move, especially given the unknown service history.

Spark plug changes are usually recommended every 30-40k miles, so changing them every year might be a bit excessive. You can check your owner's manual for specific recommendations.

The "Competition" part is confusing. It's possible the VIN identifies it as a Competition model even if it doesn't have the badges. Checking with a BMW dealership or specialist might clear things up.

Looking forward to seeing some pictures when the weather cooperates!

Re: competition package, the M6 was before BMW started doing Competition versions in the model name. The M6 had an option which was the competition package, and that package added HP, changed the steering ratio, and stiffened the suspension. On the M5, the competition package also lowered the suspension by 10mm but not on the M6. There were no markings on any cars with the competition package to indicate its inclusion.

However there were also 100 M6 coupes made called the Competition Edition. These were normal M6 coupes outfitted with basically every option including the competition package (ETA: and all the M Performance parts as brad850csi pointed out above) but only in white or gold. And those 100 cars did have markings to indicate that they are Competition Edition...on the side markers, door sills, and cup holder cover. Nothing on the rear badge...just said M6.

I believe the subsequent generation M5 was the first to be called Competition in the model name and have that word included in the rear badge.

So I was partially incorrect...there were more than 100 Competition Editions, just 100 in the US.

There's an old YouTube video of a M6 Competition Edition in 'Austin Yellow', it looks amazing. The 6 series is pretty rare here, I do occasionally see an F06 though, it's easily one of the nicest looking saloon cars I've ever seen.

Yea there's no mention of 'competition' anywhere on my M6. Just the VIN number and insurance quotes show the 'competition' thing. I honestly have no idea how, if anything, 'competition' applies to my M6! lol

Very interesting discussion. I have no horse in this race…but was curious about the suspension parts in the M5 & M6 variants. What part of the suspension would drop the vehicle lower?

Just a quick search for the front suspension parts:
  • the competition f10 M5, f06 M6, f12 M6 and f13 M6 all share the same front (left/right) struts (#1 in diagram below with part nbrs that end in 115/116)
  • the competition f06 M6, f12 M6, and f13 M6 all share the same coil springs (#6 in diagram below with part nbr that ends in 123)
  • the competition f13 w/manual tranny & competition pkg uses part nbr that ens with 121

be aware that the competition springs are 10% stiffer than the non-comp springs. Unless you track the car or have very smooth roads, you might want to rethink it and maybe look at other reputable lowering springs brands.
