I know to predict ahead and be conservative with the gas pedal but
I don't think you can conclude anyone is getting better than you are. Heavy cars with big engines can have vastly different mpg based on seemingly small differences in a commute because it takes so much gas to get one moving from a stop or to slow down and speed up in traffic. You might say you have a ten mile commute in city traffic, but it involves 20 stops and lots of slowing, and you get 13 mpg. The next person also says they have a ten mile commute in city traffic, but it's only 7 stops and less traffic and they get 20 mpg. But if you followed each other around, you'd get pretty much the same mpg.

Ditto. I tire of these threads when there's no mention of AVG MPH because that at least gives some indication of the average speed. Those with a lower AVG MPH will also tend to have a lower MPG probably due to circumstances that create more stops/starts which may indicate more city/urban driving & traffic conditions.

When the AVG MPH goes up...the average MPH usually correlates (remember there's no cause and affects in a correlation) in that there's probably less stop-n-go driving and probably indicates more highway speeds or at least travel on roads/parkways/boulevards/etc that probably have timed lights and minimum stopping.

If you're getting 20 MPH in a 650...then P L E A S E reveal what your average speed (avg MPH) is over the same period of time that you've been calculating your AVG MPG.

I got to the 20mpg only now that I am commuting about 40 miles each way daily. Cruising on the I-95 between Baltimore and DC. Comfort mode. Around 80-85 mph, except for some horrific traffic jams. A very relaxed daily cruise with an occasional "Pedal to the Metal" - mainly when an Audi coupe tries to play games... Don't know why, but I just can't stand Audi's...

Dinan s3 changed it a bit. 18 mpg when I'm averaging mostly 85 mph on the hwy in sport and DS. If I take it easy in Comfort and D around 65 - 70 it goes to around 21 22. With a turbo mated to an 8spd stomping on it really dumps fuel . . . which is why they're awesome.

Just came back from an out of town journey to attend a funeral...so I have some fresh MPG data.

As mentioned in my prior posts...average MPH plays a role in understanding the MPG. This trip was mostly traveled on federal interstate, US multi-lane limited access highways, and US two-lane roads. There was only one small town (between home & final destination) that included 3 lights and 1 other light where I had to turn off one US 2-lane road to another one. The higher MPH indicates that there was very little braking. I averaged over 23 MPG vs the 16 MPG I get normally driving around town. This was 98% of the entire trip...the othe 2% would be the city & local roads at the destination city to get to the venue of the funeral.

Gotta say the N63TU gets excellent highway MPG (in my opinion) for a 444HP engine. It's getting either the same or better MPG as my old e38 & e39 (M62 & M62tu engines respectively) that was only 282 HP and my e53 X5 with its N62 engine with 315 HP.

1st pic below is from 2/10/19 (mostly highway driving)...and the 2nd pic is from 9/16/2018 (local/city driving)

650i and I average around 20mpg too. Happy with that though as my previous 7er and 6er were averaging around 12mpg...

I'm getting 16mpg on my '15 650i Xdrive. This is with tune, CAI, M6 Mufflers, and BMS pedal tuner. Figured with mods I would have lower numbers than most due to the extra "spirited driving" i've been doing.
