Attn 640D UK Owners - Saftey Recall (EGR Cooler)
This recall is now live in the UK, Got the call today for mine to go in, booked for 3 weeks time.
https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/globa...gn?language=en Worth a call to the dealer to see if yours is affected. i dont have any symptoms at the moment but i did get this exact issue with my 530D and got stuck with a 2k bill . Oddly my bosses 730D has the fault and its not on the recall list.

They're taking mine in on the 10th of October.
My concern is that I've had it mapped and coded the dog shut. Do I need to worry about warranty or my map getting wiped off? |

Mine failed at just under 39k.
In fairness irrespective of this technical campaign it is not a safety recall which the DVLA would take notice of. So most cars will only get attention when it fails or it visits BMW to be checked. Really the first signs of the failure are coolant disappearing (some have been left the expansion tank empty after the coolant warning comes up in the dash), and usually soon after white smoke from the exhausts (but even without the smoke I managed to realise my exhausts smelt different) Mine was caught early even before the warning light because in 37k it had never used coolant. IMO it is made worse by BMW using Korean made Korens EGR coolers and not the older Mahle ones they used in earlier systems. Loads of EGR coolers have failed either with shearing pipes on the rear or internally (like mine). It is so common and so many N57's will have had it replaced it is a joke. Furthermore the B47's in some cases could be onto the 3rd EGR Valves and Coolers (as from memory they come as one component). If there is a failure then expect the car back in a few days as it is a royal pain and no doubt there will be a shortage of parts because of this TC. I doubt even if they are not in the recall chances are they will need one replacing at some point as they are generally not that great. You can semi check it by checking the coolant when cold, checking for any white smoke and check the cooler as it sits on the front, top of the engine. Remove the engine cover and there should be a big metal rectangle right in front behind a cover. If it smells of coolant/coolant droplets (usually white spots) around there then chances are it has sheared on the metal pipe on the back (will be at the very first at startup when it is the most noticeable). Even with the EGR off there will still be coolant circulating around this area as it forms part of the overall cooling system of the car. The main reason for this failure is essentially the coolant mixes with carbon and high temps are cooled enough, you end up melting in the inlet manifold (recently came across one N57 that ingested some of the inlet manifold writing the engine off, BMW are repairing it FOC with a new engine at £17,500). Overall if these engines (N57) use coolant begin worrying, they never should! |

Awesome, posted recently that my coolant warning came on and it was lower than I'd expect. Suspect mines got a problem. Need to get the brake fluid changed so was going to get the dealer to do it with the not due next month. Will get them to check this as well.
Would certainly explain where the coolant went as engine oil was clean. |

I did get mine under warranty not long before it ran out. But loads have been changed out of warranty under goodwill either FOC or minimal charge. Mine would have been 600 ish all said and done plus an identification charge no doubt.
I am miffed at bmw going cheap. I don't think in itself is "bad" it is just it has "issues". Bmw is far from the only manufacturer with issues I know Volvo went through a spate with the new engine design as well. EGR systems as a whole are under more pressure than ever so it won't help the issues of cost reduction. For me it all boils down to attempting to shave costs where it should not have been. |

Just dropped mine in this morning, good news is it can be done without loss to coding or mapping, bad news I got a 2 series coupe as a courtesy car, honestly thought it was broke when I put my foot down

Mine was in the weekend and strangely they said there was no recall.
Whether it is because mine has already broke and being replaced. I will let you judge. |

Spoke to my dealer who said there was no recall for the EGR problem and they didn't know anything about it. Sent the dealer a copy of the press release and they referred me to BMW UK. The guy at BMW firstly said that it didn't apply to my car---despite the fact that it has a 3 litre diesel engine with a build date between the relevant dates mentioned in the press release. He then said that it only applied to European vehicles, not to UK cars.
Not happy with his response and fired off an email expressing my concerns. One week later and nothing--not even an acknowledgment. I would love to hear from anyone who has a dealer that has accepted that there might be a problem. I will give BMW UK a few more days before they get another email asking them what's happening and them it looks like i will be raising a formal complaint with BMW UK. Any other suggestions would be welcome. |

Note this has been extended today (23/10/18) by BMW to cover vehicles from August 2010 - August 2017.
