2009 335 to 2013 640 Gran Coupe?

Looking for some opinions. Thinking about moving from my 335 into a 640 Gran Coupe.
I have a kid and I am just looking at getting something a little more comfortable. I have been driving a MT 3 series for 20 years.
I actually liked the 535 I had as a loaner, but the 6 just looks better IMHO.
Anyone have any thoughts on this move? The 640 is preferred over the 650 only because I sit in hours of traffic commuting every day and I have to assume way better gas mileage in the 640.
Thanks,
MB

650... Trust me. When that traffic opens up even a tad it will all have been worth while.

Also, you have ECO mode. Traffic will be a breeze.

you'll really have to test drive it. a manual 335 can move, and an auto 640 might really kill the enjoyment for you. i have a 650 and don't gun it much, but the once or twice a day that i do, i'm glad i didn't take a 640 and live happy knowing an M6 would've been too much. and definitely a 6 over a 5, as nice as that car is

The 6 series is a very very large car. You won't be using the term "nimble" with it. So if you are good with that....
And the V8 gets about 2-3 less MPG than the 6. So don't let that make your decision.

Get the 650 over the 640. Unless you're less into performance and more into fuel economy, you won't regret it. Test driving will reveal a noticeable difference in torque and accelaration between the two.

The 6-series is so heavy that you can't park it at the coast for extended periods - otherwise you mess up the tides.

Can't imagine that a person who's in a turbo 3-series will be happy with pretty much the same engine in that heavy chassis. And resell value might be questionable.

Then there is the buy-new price. I normally have the illusion that I understand most pricing and upsell strategies in the north American car market. Not so with the non-M 6-series. It is just bloody expensive. It is priced like a 7-series coupe but there are only superficial differences to a F10 (some of which do matter, but the feel is definitely more F10 than F01).

Money sink if you ask me.

Squddie - now that was funny!

It is a HUGE car and it depreciates like a sinking ship. All true. I would never want to see someone buy one new - right now my car (2014 GC) is going through the auctions at $55K. This is a $103,000 car.... now barely worth 50%.

However...
The interior is stunning - one of the best in the BMW lineup.
The looks are stunning as well - also probably some of the best in the BMW lineup.
(yes both subjective)
The sound of the V8 is intoxicating (that's just fact )
The steering is probably one of the best in the CURRENT BMW lineup (subjective of course)
and the car is unique...

To me, I'm actually liking my 650GC more and more each day. Other than a M3, I don't know what else appeals to me in the BMW lineup. And even then, the ability to scoot across traffic in the rain and snow with the AWD is something I don't know if I can live without (once you have AWD in Chicago, it is hard to go back).

Just my 2 cents of course

No. I really wish it did. I don't think too many dealers piled that option on. Too bad. Kind of like active steering in the previous gen X5/X6, made the car wonderful but they were worried nobody would pay for it.

I made the move from a 335i coupe w/ AA I/C and AA tuning to a 4 dr 328i Msport sedan and just recently 650i coupe.

Living in Hawaii where the max speed limit anywhere on the island is 55 I put the pedal down for the first time yesterday to make a pass and the torque and speed felt like my old baby the 335i w/o the missed bov swoosh sound!

If you make the move, I don't think you'd be sorry, I know I'm not.

Ding ding.

Best looking model in the current BMW lineup. Best interior in the current BMW lineup.

Depreciation is a bitch, true, but it always is for cars in this class. Who cares.

I usually change cars every 12 months, still driving the 6 since nothing other than maybe a P car appeals after this.

All valuable opinions gents and much appreciated. Let me add some more to the picture to help you understand where I am coming from. It is hard to do when we only have so much room to type here...
First, I have been driving E36 M3's and this 335 for the last 25 years combined (all of them MT). I am sick of three pedals in 1.5 hour commute....each way every day here in DC.

I need paddles, and the 6 series just looks correctly proportioned to me and you guys telling me the interior is nice (since I spend 3 hours in the car every day) I want that.

There is no chance I buy new. I am looking for them to slip into the 40's and then I don't have to absorb the 60k depreciation so that is not an issue.

I am being swayed by you guys to get the 650 over the 640 but I thought the mpg would be more significant than 3mpg or so. One of the reasons I can't bring myself to get another M3 is that right now I get 22mpg in traffic and the guys at work that have E90 series' M3's tell me they are getting 12-14 mpg...I can't deal with that.

I also have a few classic cars. One sports car (manual) and one sedan so I do have some fun cars, but I want to like the car I am driving since I am in it so much. I like my 335 a lot, but when I had the 5 series loaner it was heavier for sure, but I just realized after driving that for a week that it didn't bother me. I enjoyed having little softer ride so I think a sixer may be the way to go.

I have also looked at Maser's and Aston's, but just can't see paying that much for upkeep and I have a kid so a 911 is out (for now) just not enough room...

I guess I will have to go test drive them when this Summer and will let you guys know which way I go. Appreciate the input and if you have anything further to add I am all ears.

Not sure about the GC's but the interior of my coupe is more comfortable than any other car I've sat in, the seats have so many ways to adjust them for a custom fit so your commute will be comfy. As far as mpg goes, I'm on a small island so it wasn't an issue but even if I had to commute as far as you do I would trade the comfort of the ride over the cost of the gas.

As far a deprecation goes, I was able to get mine for $45k w/ 3,900mi all serviced at BMW Honolulu and they gave me $22k for my 328i which I bought brand new off the showroom floor for around $50k almost had 40,000mi at trade in.

I don't see why you couldn't find one in the $40k range by summer. Good luck with your search.

I've got a 2011 335xi 6MT and a 2014 650xi GC. While the 3 is a lot of fun to drive (heel and toe) the 6 blows it away. As someone else said, the 640 is lethargic IMO, the 650 has a rush of power that seems endless. When I stomp on the loud pedal for a quick pass in a tight spot (2 lane road) it gets the job done every time without breaking a sweat. In short, raise your expectations a little higher and get the 650, it's loads better.

While I understand the power cravings of the 8 cylinder owners, try the 6. That most reliable of all current BMW engines. Maybe it's for you, maybe not enough. Drop the 6 in Sport, switch the shifter left, plenty of fun for me.
But that's me
You need to find yours.

If you're getting the 650i, it has to be 2013 and up with the N63TU motor. The N63 is just too troublesome, especially at mileages you will be looking at.

Copy all gents. Was the engine shift during the 2013 model year? How can I tell if it has the upgrade?

I will try the 640 and then the 650...again, will let you know what I decide. Thanks again for all the input.

Regards,
Matt

The Gran Coupe came out in 2013 (at least here in the states), so no worry on the motor. The 2013s and early 2014s had the analog dash (640/650). Mid 2014 builds started to get the digital dash (aka multi-functional some love it, some (me) hate it (very gimmicky)) when the car was equipped as an M Sport Edition (about $5K for $12K in options - cause the car was not selling so well at $110K).

The 2016s got a mild refresh (some prefer the older style) as well as a couple of new colors. The 650GC M sport edition 2014s (and maybe 2013s) had the sport exhaust included. It became standard on the 650GC in either 2015 or 2016 (with or without the M Sport). Correct me if I'm wrong guys.

The 640 should be a better balanced car and lighter weight.

Oh the 2013 and 2014s have the free BMW maintenance that will transfer with the sale, That went away on the 2015s (so no free maint if you are not the original owner).

And finally, the seats in the GC are lower than the coupe (I think) and not nearly as comfortable. Actually I should say, they just are not comfortable - at least in the butt area

But damn the car is stunning to look at!

(and I shouldn't have said the M3 was the only other car in BMWs line up that appealed to me - because I got on the M2 waiting list like 3 days after posting that...)

deciding

I've been looking for a replacement for my 09 335 msport and pretty much decided on the 2013 650 as well. I just have to test drive one now lol. I don't want to get another 3 series, and I find the m series to be a little to much, the 650 looks like the best mix of comfort and performance, gc or not.

It's either this or a brand new camry @ 179/mo lol.

Hey mate,

I stepped out of a e92 335 into a 640i vert and it is defiantly worth the change!

I've been thinking of doing this exact same thing myself. The main reason being I don't want to "change" into the same car....

I've seen some 2012 with ~25k miles vert's for high 30's .... any comments on the maintenance on the verts? Would be jumping from a n54 coupe if I did. Any significant differences from 2012-2013/14?

Do people generally get good trade in values at the dealers (someone mentioned that above)? Also, in terms of CPO Elite (I think that's the term)....what does that mean vs. normal CPO....?
