So we have a "Post a Picture of the Last Item You Bought" thread, but any fool can go out and buy something. What about making something with your own two hands? So roll up your sleeves, make something, and post up a photo!

I'll get us started. I made a bolt tonight. I needed an M8 x 1.0 socket head cap screw to replace one I lost. Apparently those arent readily available. So I took an M8 x 1.25 socket head cap screw and an M8 x 1.0 bolt and went to town. Cut, grind, weld, bingo. Got myself a bolt.

Man, no one else on this forum into making stuff other than me? let's see some projects fellas!

Here's a pull out drawer I made for the FJ this weekend. It'll serve as the base for our sleeping platform for camping. First time i've used 8020 aluminum extrusions; I'm usually inclined to do wood or fabricate with metal. it's cool stuff. I'm not totally sold on it but it's got its place.

That’s clean! What kind of wood is that? Were the extrusions powder coated? Interested to see what you’ll put over it.

My rear seats (well second row, deleted third row) split 50/50. Plan is to remove one half and build a 50% drawer behind the seat I keep. Your picture has reignited that plan.

For me, last things I made were overhead storage shelves in the garage (with built in light) over the work bench I also made.

I just made my 80 Series stop leaking and purr like a kitten with about 16 hours in the garage this weekend. Does that count?

I made a combination bird feeder pole and a mount for my weather station. I set it in the ground about 18" using Quikrete and a 4" PVC sleeve. I filled the entire 3/4" pipe with sand to damp the wind buffeting and it seems to be helping so far.

Thanks! The drawer is just cabinet grade Baltic Birch. Comes in a 5x5 sheet. We used it exclusively when I worked in a cabinet shop as it's much higher quality than the standard 4x8 sheets you typically get at the local home improvement store.

The frame is anodized aluminum. Ordered from these guys as I found their site to be really well laid out with lots of instructional videos and ideas: https://8020.net/product-basics That said, it's NOT cheap. You can find this stuff for less through Amazon and such. But being totally new to it I don't want to fuss with not being sure all the parts would fit so I just sucked it up and ordered from 8020. One thing I really liked is the precision. Everything is bang-on perfect from length, to perfect right angles on cuts. I spent about 5 hours planning it out and shopping and about an hour assembling, which is the exact opposite of how I usually roll when using wood or fabricating metal where I just buy a crap ton of material and see where the project takes me.

Digging those overhead shelves! I need to make some myself.

Nice work! I need to do this myself. The wife bought a couple of those stupid bird feeder poles from Lowes that you just stab into the ground. We have hard pack clay 6 inches down so you cant get them in far enough to keep them stable. Every storm that comes in blows the dumb things down. I like your solution. Adding that to the spring time to-do list!

Super clean work! That looks great man! I have a few small projects I'm trying to get started. Work and the gym are consuming me as of late. I'll get some pictures up once I start making progress.

You had me at "precision." Machinists hated me when I did actual engineering as an engineer. GDT in the thousandths of millimeters It may be time for me to dust off the SolidWorks and Siemens NX and come up with something for the, yes, 80 Series Land Cruiser.

The rarest of North American spec 80s actually (1 of 9 - may be the only one without OEM roof rack or side steps). '97 Collectors Edition in 6M1 Emerald Green Pearl over Oak. Triple locked from the factory, adjustable BP51 suspension, ARB things, winch, Scheel-Mann Seats, ALL the maintenance (dat spreadsheet doe), low miles (for these things at least)... I've been looking for years. But I don't want to turn this into a Toyota thread.

Let me guess, you're a fellow engineer who also moved into management and hasnt gotten to do any real down and dirty CAD work for years? It's been so long for me that the last CAD package I used was AutoCAD back in like 1996! I sketched everything up for the box in a notebook which is how I roll these days. Wish I could use Solidworks. I have a couple employees who would have gladly done it for me in solidworks but that whole company resource thing, you know. Gotta set a good example.

Man, you can sidetrack any of my threads with tasty 80 series talk! I LOVE those things. Man how I love them. We were very close to buying one but ultimately went with the FJ as it's a little smaller and my wife felt more comfortable driving it. That and we wanted absolute reliability and now that those things are like 20 to 25 yers old, we just couldn't bring ourselves to shell out that kind of coin on such an old vehicle when reliability was at the top of the list. Now that I try to shoehorn all our needs into the FJ (including sleeping in it) I wonder if we went a little too small!

I think maybe it's time to start and over-landing build thread?!

It's so windy where I live in Idaho that I actually put up guy lines on my shepherd hooks to keep them from blowing over. After I finished the patio concrete and the landscaping, I decided this was a much better solution. It's not perfect, but it is way better than those hooks.

I'll tell you, the thing is an absolute tank. That said, I have the newest one you can legally get, and it is 23 years old. Sure, you can get <100k examples, but you're going to want a '95 - '97 ('96+ for me since I want OBDII). With the right (read, correct) options, you're looking at biiiig coin for what it is. I mean $77k + fees on BaT?!?! A '95 just sold for $60k. Makes me happy with what I've got.

My opinion, you got the right truck. They sell for now with 50k miles what they sold for new and more appropriate technology. While mine is indestructible, it's only at that point because effectively everything has been replaced. Yours will be many, many years to that point.

That said, it's my adventure truck and adventures we shall see! I'm worried we are the minority with overlanding on here, however. I wonder if it will make it to Seattle...

Yeah, crazy money right now for all these Toyotas. I know the quality is top notch and they just keep on running, but eventually age catches up. They may not die on you and strand you but rubber seals dry out, plastic parts crack, etc. You cant fight age! Every plastic piece on our Delica was brittle as hell. Electrical connectors, interior trim pieces, etc would all would snap off in your hand. That was the reason I wanted not only a Toyota but one that was less than 10 years old.

Anyway, love yur 80 series. Let's start an over-landing thread!

I had originally wanted to just threaded inserts in the bottom and just bolt it through the table, but drill press table is solid so I used two of these toggle clamps attached to the underside and they work great, super sturdy.
