Flippers

Getting bored with current collection and thinking about flipping a few.

How many of you flip your watches? If so, what brands, besides Rolex, do you feel hold their value? I know pre-owned is the way to go and fine with that.

Is this a common hobby?

I can't say I'm a qualified flipper but when I feel like I'm no longer attached to a particular brand/model I can let it go .
Sometimes instead of splurging some hefty $$$$ on a particular watch trading can be considered as well .However, not every watch is valuable as other brands you know
Patek Philippe holds its value besides Rolex

It’s not so much a brand but a selective few watches.. if you buy preowned you never have access to the hot watches at msrp.. as you will never develop a relationship/purchase history with the brand. Sadly,. the price of entry to the hobby is losing money on the dogs...to be able to access the more desirable watches...

Makes sense. Was thinking of wearing a JLC Master Compressor GMT /World Timer or Breitling Chronomat GMT 18K/SS or IWC Pilot Chrono or IWC Portugeiser for a few months...

i used to flip and really, unless you are buying them cheap preowned, really only some rolex, some pateks and some APs hold their value. And those ones you wont get near a good enough price to make money unless you get lucky at an AD, or buy a lot of watches that lose value from an AD to get access to some.

but, the market is so full of flippers right now that margins are slim and unless you have an in at a rolex AD, you arent going to be able to make much. at best, you will break even

I was thinking about buying something and wearing for a little while and then flipping for something else, if I don't like it. Not really treasure hunting - just a hobby and ok with a little loss. I guess you could call it a rental fee...

Right now, eyeing a 116518 Daytona.

Might I suggest getting a 116520 in the grey market ... then buying Smarty endlinks for $100 and buy oyster flex strap for like $600. It’s a more collectible watch and likely appreciates

Why not TT? Thought they were making a comeback and best of both worlds? I am leaning towards gold on strap but curious...

yeah doing it that way isnt bad. its essentially how i collected for years. buy something i liked, but at a good enough price to not lose a ton. wear it for awhile until i got tired of it, and sell it for hopefully not a big loss.

Really, the best daytonas to buy are the SS models but at msrp and not secondary market. the PM models dont hold value unless you are getting the rare ones. and the TT hold value even worse.

right now they are going for 17k+ and the market seems to have topped out. 5 years ago, yeah i would have recommended this, but in the current market, no way.
