N63, n63tu, s63...

So I just bought a 2012 650i. I've come to realize it has the N63 & even though the car is running fine with 81K miles, I know it's just a matter of time.

So I figure it makes sense to have a motor built & ready to go. Now, I'd be perfectly satisfied with a built N63 & BMS Stage 2 tune. But, if I'm going to build a new motor anyway...

It is my understanding the N63TU/S63TU has things like Valvetronics, which my car doesn't have. So I'd have to source computer & harnessright?

Hate to say it but why don't you just sell your car and look for one with the TU or just save up for the M6 with the money you're going to spend building another motor?

Where’s the fun in that?

Can't tell if you are trolling or not. Makes no sense building a motor for an event (motor blowing) that may or may not happen. You'll be spending more than half of what your car is worth building this motor and when you're done you'll have a car that's still not even half of what an M6 is. If you have the time and money then do as you wish. It's your car. I would rather start with a superior platform.

I see what you're saying. But that's not what I want to do.

I thought, I'll just pull the motor & change the timing chain, bearings, & seals. But I might as well do a new oil pump while I'm at it. & really, if I'm going that far why not forged rods? Might as well bump up the compression, bigger cams?

So then I'm thinking I can go ahead & start building the motor before pulling the motor if I go ahead & buy a second motor. Well, if I'm going to buy another motor. Might as well swap in an S63.

Here’s a link that explains the various iterations of the n63 engine. Perhaps it will help you as you get deep into the nightmare that is ahead of you: https://bmwtuning.co/bmw-n63-vs-n63t...tu2-vs-n63tu3/
  1. N63B44O0 – (N63)
  2. N63B44O1 – (N63TU)
  3. N63B44O2 – (N63TU2)
  4. N63B44M3 – (N63TU3)
  5. N63B44T3 – (N63TU3)

Looks like the TU adds valvetronics. So I would have to retrofit a new computer & most likely a harness.

Or I could just buy an N63TU2/N63TU3 & use my N63 heads.

Or maybe an S63. That would be a straight swap.

You should look up some members on there. Plenty of guys getting more than enough power out of the N63 without worrying about the abbreviations.

From personal experience, going from the N63 to N63tu, it did not improve the reliabaility just because of the "tu." Aa a matter of fact, the tu drank more oil, which is why I'm back with the N63.

Which makes sense as even the N63R is still having issues and is part of the newest lawsuit.

If it's about power, look up some of the available stock dyno numbers. The tu only seems to have gotten an increase on paper and my butt dyno tells me the same.

The main thing I’m worried about is timing chain & spent bearings. From what I read the TU has a new timing chain & additional oil nozzles including a sprayer on top of the pistons.

There are no 6 series with the tu2. You are a tu.
