List of me messing with my F06
Hi all,
Rather new owner of a late 2016 F06 is Black. Had a F10 for a very long time before selling it during the lock down. I like doing small jobs and mods to all my cars, either myself or by someone who knows what they are doing. So thought I will start this thread to list some of the things I have done and for anyone else's reference and for me in-case I forgot how I did it when I get to do it again next time. ![]() The car. 640D N57D30T1 first job. Air filter, pollen filter and an oil change. Air filter is easy to change on these, lift up plastic cover. Unclip two tabs on the passenger side and lift up. It seems the Original BMW filter is a Mahle LX2796/1 BMW Original at the bottom. |

Next was Pollen Filter,
It too seems the Original was a MAHLE. So replaced with a MAHLE but also with the bacteria protection option. Arrow to be pointing towards the passenger seat. From Engine to passenger seat. same as F10, under the glove box, few T10 screws to remove. Last edited by suj999; 01-11-2023 at 06:35 AM.. Reason: words |

Next was the oil change.
Thanks to this forum and rasa, figured out I would need 6.5L. Wanted to know what make the Original filter was.. so (go on see if you can guess) So bought an original filter to see who makes it. Yep.. Its MAHLE again. Bought 2 of Castrol Edge 5W30M oils and headed down to a local indy as I didn't fancy jacking up and doing the work. (my trusted old indy had retired from doing mechanical work during Covid, so still on the hunt for a good mechanic, recommendations welcome) On the ramp for the oil change. I only ended up putting in about 6.3L as I do remember with these cars (or at least the F10) that you would get an oil overfilled warning if the oil is at max and the DPF dumps any more fuel in. 6.3L made it near the MAX line, like around 90% mark. |

Next, it was time to update the Maps on the car.
As it still had the original 2016 base. So bought a 1 year licence from BMW. I know it can be had cheaper and done it on the F10 in the past, but looking now, people wanted £50 and BMW wanted £64 as it was on sale, so went with BMW. To do a full USB update, you need a 64GB stick, plunged into the front USB. Updated to 22-2 for now will also get another 11 months of updates from this licence. |

From BMW connected drive store. My 640d is on ID5 so this maybe different of on earlier I drive model https://www.bmw.co.uk/en/shop/ls/cp/connected-drive Yep, you can check as often as you want and update untill the subscription runs out. Very easy to update by USB, though the system can update over the air too if the licence is active but it doesn't do a full update over the air. You use the BMW download manager to download the update. Then here is the instructions on what to do in the car. Last edited by suj999; 01-13-2023 at 05:14 AM.. |

The mech only put in about 6.1 so after a quick drive checked the dipstick and it was by the min mark, so I put in about another 200-300ml and it was almost near the max mark on the dipstick. |

Next a quick bulb change for the reading lights in the front.
The car already has LED lights in most places like under the door cards and number plate etc, but the interior lights are still warm white. I actually prefer the warm white in the car, but wanted more cooler colour on the spot lights fitted in the reading lights. Got a few LED bulbs then to remove the light modules, its easier if you remove the cover around the emergency call ect then using a small panel remover to push the metal clips apart to release the module. The clips are marked in purple squares. the panel is down now. To remove the spot lights, on the back a small twist will lift the bulb holder out. I only changed the reading lights which are activated by the push buttons and left the interior lights to standard. |

True the F10 was a very nice car especially for it's time. Mine had the tan seats which I really wanted again in the 6er, but had to settle for black seats as the tan seats seem to be so rare in the AUC cars. But the black is so boring.. |

Yeah, I've been trying to find my old pics from the F10 forum, I had the cream interior with the piano black trim which was immaculate and didn't scratch much when treated; the lacquer was definitely stronger. Recently picked up some Piano Black trim for the 6 series, its in excellent overall condition but lacquer is softer for sure so, will protect it prior to changing it.

Next up, this was kind of a slightly larger project.
The car came with HiFi amp and speakers. I wanted to improve the sound a bit and wanted to install the Top HiFi (H/K) speakers in the car. So for those interested, the HiFi system has an around 200W amp and 9 speaker system. Its rather easy to increase this to a better quality system by changing all the mids and adding two extra tweeters to make it a 11 speaker system. (could also add a tweeter to the centre, but I will tell later why I didn't in the end). By the way, this is by means no audiophile route and I am sure some won't like it. But it fits my music taste and its more about me personalising my car. So first I started on the centre speaker behind the nav display. Very easy to remove with trim remover tools. just lift up the grill and it will pop out. underneath you fill find the speaker (s). 3 screws and lift the speaker, unclip blue connector. Hifi Midrange part number: 65139169689 Top HiFi Midrange:65139368383 or 65139169690 Top Hifi Tweeter:65139184795 to fit the tweeters you will also need two extra screws as they won't be fitted on the HiFi model (though it seems if you had a very early F06 HiFi equipped car, these came with HiFi tweeters and they would have the screws) Screw part number: 07149185673 The crossover capacitor goes in this slot, which will come pre wired in the tweeter. Connect tweeter into the mid range speaker, and mid range to the car and screw it all back down. Before and after. and push the grill back down. Job done. You can mediately hear that the Top HiFi speakers are louder and clearer, the tweeter really helps the highs. *I did end up removing the Top HiFi Tweeter from the centre channel at the end after I had fitted all the other speakers. This is to do with stereo sound spacing and the tweer in the centre was making it worse I thought. Will explain more later. This maybe why BMW too removed the tweeter in the LCI F06 HiFi models. . Even managed to test drive a G30 for few days with Tan seats when I was in Germany when they came out. As I was going to move to the G30. Regarding the BMW Leds, they are from BMW. Part number 63122212788 |

The white seats look very nice in that 5 and the 6er, but with kids there is no way I would be able to look after it.
I am surprised that the carpet isn't cream coloured in your 5, I thought if you went for ivory then the carpets are cream? and get dirty very quickly. |

Next up it was the door speakers.
I replaced the HiFi mids and tweeters with Top HiFi mids and tweeters and also changed the grill for the tweeters in case the HiFi grillsdidn't fit but I think they would have. before Open up the door cards. Driver side only one screw, visible and easy to access. On passenger sides two screws and one hidden behind door arm grip trim. Each door cards has around 10 plastic trim clips and two metalic clips in the centre by the arm grip that are much stronger but a good pull will dislodge them once the plastic ones are unclipped using trim remover tools. You are bound to brake some plastic ones so I had ready bought some genuine spares, Driver door panel removed, can see the Hifi Mids. Blue connectors unclipped. Tweeter and grill unclipped from door card. Mid removed HiFi mid vs Top HiFi Mid Part numbers HiFi Mid:65139210451 Top HiFi Mid:65139364956 HiFi Tweeter:65139248716 Top HiFi Tweeter:65139226357 Same speakers for the front and back doors. The Top HiFi mids and tweeters are of a much better quality and in my opinion has made the sound noticeably better. The amp is powerful enough and I wasn't looking for more volume. Finished door with new grill and tweeter. |

The grills,
While I had the speakers I also wanted to check the weight as the Top Hi-Fi ones felt heavier. 176g HiFi 238G Top HiFi HiFi ~45g Top HiFi ~55g interesting. |
