Here are results from the Sport Auto performance test comparing the 2013 Alpina B6 (F13) versus the 2013 M6 (F13) coupe.

The Alpina B6 Biturbo (full specs) is powered by BMW's 4.4L V8 engine rated at 540hp and 730nm torque and top speed of 334 km/h.

The M6 features 560hp and 680Nm torque with a top speed of 305 km/h.

Weight becomes the deciding factor between 2 almost equally powered almost same model cars with different approaches in performance and use.

always like Alpina's... their cars just seem to be sort of higher quality than their regular BMW versions. and yes, much more comfortable.

Alpina is also more expensive while having a worse performance, worse fuel consumption, worse design and basically nothing better. The only good I've sen in Alpinas B6 E63/E64 was leather stitching, which isn't an advantage over F12/F13 anymore and I also liked their sporty hood on LCI E63/E64 B6.

I'd like to know why exactly are they charging more for Alpina while I've seen some people call it "poor man's M". A customer who can pay 180k can also pay 190k, unless he really stretched last money to buy an M car (in which case he shouldn't buy an M car in the first place).

I don't consider "exclusivity" as a valid argument because it sounds like a poor marketing attempt at cars which aren't desirable in the first place for one or another reason.

Alpina makes respectable alternatives to BMW M. Slight sacrifice in performance for increased comfort. The M6 has better fuel consumtion!

New M5 and M6 more comfortable and luxurious than ever before. I don't think there are any comfort issues with the new M6, and if there are nowhere significant enough to compromise all its advantages over Alpina.

Exclusivity is the main reason people buy them.

And they can do individual beyond what you'd ever think possible.

I'd love to have a few bottles of their fine wine.

Alpina and M offer different products to different clientele, if you only looking for fractions of a second on maximum attack performance numbers then obviously the M is the way to go, but if you're looking for something a little more refined and possibly more comfortable and easier to live with then you're probably an Alpina type of person.

Personally, I'd probably take an M6 over a B6, but, if they make a B6 Gran Coupe I'd probably take it over an M6 or M6GC. Not that I can afford any of them.

I do think Alpina have lost some of their exclusivity, the range seems to be a little dull these days, I'd like to see them doing something a little different... having said that the B7 is pretty much at the top of my lottery list, and I'd love to have an Alpina E24 or E28.

Yes and as Matski mentioned as well, it seems that their latest productions started loosing many of its exclusivity.

My favorite Alpina is still the B7...seems the most appropriate since there isn't an M variant that supercedes it in performance.

Alpina has definitely had some models as the B8 4.6 that stood out as alternatives to the M models. I like the new B3 GT3, not far behind the M3 GTS performance, but I don't think a single person would rather buy a B3 over the GTS. BMW's idea to bring the Alpina B7 as the 7 flagship is a great idea. They should have left Alpina to make the X5/6 flagships rather than building the X5/6M. Leave the M's for 1,3,5,6 series.

Because M5/M6 customers don't feel like paying more for a slower, fuel hungry and unattractive alternative. Word "exclusive" is a nice coverup for a word "undesirable" and that is exactly the case here.

Also, DCT vs no DCT is a huge factor. The shift speed of DCT in fastest settings save time on track or drag strip.

Alpinas are not more expensive than M models - don't know where you got this info.

The B3S is cheaper than a M3, as is the B3 GT to the M3 GTS.
The B5 and B6 are also 2000 EUR cheaper in base price (with more equippment) than the M5 & M6.

Sorry most of you guys have absolutely no idea about Alpina, never driven one, maybe never seen one in the flesh.
There is something very special about these cars. The leatherwork is goregeous and they just seem more "perfect".
The real strenght of Alpina is delivering very good every day performance and they are better at that than M.
Now if you are looking for a hardcore sportscar - thats not the right car to look at.
Alpina customers dont take their cars to the track, they drive it every day and want comfort but also the performance on the country roads.
Then there is the Autobahn - as Alpina driver - at 250km/h you say bye bye to most M drivers as they are limited to 250 - in recent models it is possible to get a higher top speed option, but still slower than the Alpina.
The exclusivity is another point, you get to see thousands of M cars but Alpina builds only a few hundreds per model.
Also as example try calling M GmbH for some question and try calling Alpina - customer service is much more personal.

Maybe I should mention I am an ex Alpina owner and that we had 5 Alpinas in the family...
