Is it the brand perception of these "better" cars or is it the look at me bling factor that you're willing to spend more on and get less ?
I was thinking the same. By reading some of the posts in this thread, it looks like most would prefer to buy a car because of it's perception/exotic looks where the performance is secondary (see: prefers buying an Aston Martin because of it's look vs. it's performance). Look, prices are going up but the way I look at it, sure BMW is just that, a BMW and doesn't have that status as a Porsche or Ferrari, but it offers performance, looks and everyday driving - a balanced car for the same price as cars you would only drive in certain conditions. In that sense, the BMW could be seen as value.

How about the Maserati Gran Turismo or the new 911 Carrera S which has pretty much identical claimed performance figures (4.3s 0-60, 188mph) and the msrp is $96,400.

As much as I love this new M6, and trust me I DO, I would go for the 911 and save a bit of cash in the process.
Maserati is not that nice to me compare to the new M6. 911 is a different car comparison.

Large trunk - lots of space for trunk money

The MSRP is just a suggestion. If history is any guide, the M6 will have a hefty 'option allowance' faster that you can say "The Joy of Driving".

well i payed 100k Euros for my C63 (an insane price for a C-Class)

so 125k Euros for an M6 sounds fair.

Most important to me is the monthly lease though

Sorry to hear that, but if you've got the wood why not have some fun...

Exactly right, most of these will be leased with heavily subsidized rates, or not at all.

you'll be able to get a 997.2 GT3 for that price. but good luck when it comes to the 991 GT3 (when it comes out in a couple years). the 991 Carrera S is already $120k and the M6 blows it away.

When I'm about to drop 120k on a whip, I don't look at 'league', I look at Porsche, Maserati and Aston. Only when, or if, I can't quite reach for the 'stars', do I land on the moon (BMW/Benz dealer).

Wrong. 991 Carrera S starts at 96400. Provide a link/factual info to support your statement that M6 'blows it away'.

I agree, this car is too expensive. At 120k, the M6 is entering exotic car territory. And as much as I love BMWs, they are not exotics. Especially when it is based on a car that starts as low as 50k (528i) or 75k (640i).

The M6 has the performance of a 120k car, and sure it looks beautiful but it just doesn't have the bling, prestige or exclusivity of a Masarati or Aston. And in the end like it or not, when someone is spending 120k on a car, all these factors start coming into play.

For 120k I want my car to still turn heads when it's a few years old. IMHO a 2005 Aston Vantage or even a late 90's DB7 will turn far more heads than a 2005 M6.

That's what I was thinking, at least as goes reliability. That said, I know I won't buy an M6 (or M anything else, I suspect) as I am really liking that grand coupe and think that'll be my next purchase.

Not that I am in the market for an M6, but BMW, I am starting to lose faith.

No worries. In 5 years this F12 ///M6 will be around 50-60k in pre-owned form. Just like the outgoing E6X m6 is now. Dealerships need to MOVE inventory.

Previous generation of M6 was GT also, but you could compare it to Porsche 997 Turbo or Gallardo. The newest generation of M6 is too fat for the new Porsche Turbo or LP560.

Is the new M6 worth it? Let's take a look....

VS 911.

The M6 is a bigger car than the new 911 Vert and is more of a GT car etc.so it's not a very even comparison. But in terms of quality/style I think it is very close if not equal. More importantly it beats the XKR hands down which was NOT the case with the previous Gen....

VS Vantage.

Here where it gets tougher. The Vantage has waaaaay more cachet and exoticness but in terms of interior quality is about even and performance is less. AND a new Vantage Vert is still more money. BUT, a used Vantage Vert would be closer to an M6 in price..........so who wins? For me, the Vantage because it is an Aston and it IS more exotic than an M6, but the gap is closing.......

VS SL63/65

Again not quite fair as the SL only really has two seats but in terms of looks the M6 blows the new SL with its' "fishbowl" headlights out of the water and interior quality is the same- although the Merc interior design is retro vs the M6's more modern look...

VS Jag XKR

Closest rival but the new M6 is soooooo much better. Performance-better. Interior quality-better. Exterior design-better. Unless you're a Jag nut the new M6 beats it solidly which by the way is what BMW was after to begin with- not Aston or Porsche....

I would say in the US a 120K price max for the M6 Vert would be ideal but since BMW knows China and Russia will pay waaaaaay more than you can probably expect close to 130k for a Vert easily....

Based on all this despite the price the M6 is the winner. Only Aston is better but this is not a huge gap since the Vantage is visually a smaller car. Truly a fair comparo would be versus an Aston DB9 and then you are talking about a 100-150k difference in price at that point.

Would I take an 06/08 DB9 over a new M6- very, very tough choice....
I agree with everything you have stated, the only issue i have with Aston is that the interiors are really really dated considering they are supposed to be uber classy.

I'm just upset at the price because its already too expensive for me and i really want one lets hope business goes well and i can buy one! For me in all departments the M6 is better than the rest, this new car is i believe BMW's best work yet!

Not to change the subject but DAYUM, a rant is in order.

100% car tax and a 20% emission. Does that 20% actually go toward cleaning the air ?
Is there a big ass machine that filters the air and this 20% helps pay for the machine and it's upkeep ?
WTH
100% car tax, so you have to work to buy yourself one and buy a public official one as well.... That is some bs
Really, where does all that "tax" money go ?

Aaaaand [end rant]

120K... Nuts. I can't imagine the lease rates on this beast will be good. Residual value will be in the tank. Buying one off-lease = good sense.

Why are we comparing the small 911 to the GT M6?

In fact, the new M6 comes to the market with not alot of players to be matched up against imo...
