The debut of the all-new 2013 BMW M6 models also marks the debut of the long-awaited M Carbon Ceramic Brakes option. Details are limited so far but we've compiled what's known so far:

The M Carbon Ceramic Brakes have bigger rotors at the front axle (410mm vs 400mm standard), reduce the unsprung weight by 19.4 kg or 42.8 lb, and obviously increase fade resistance. While the standard brake calipers for the M6 models are painted in dark blue metallic, the carbon ceramic brakes are painted in a noble gold shade.

There's no word on pricing yet, but they won't be cheap for sure (option code is 2NK). The M Carbon Ceramic brakes will be available for the BMW M6 models and -- from July production on -- for the BMW F10 M5.

See below for a comparison table and a feature on the M Carbon Ceramic brakes (courtesy of M-Power.com).

M-Power.com Feature

The latest version of the compound high-performance braking system helps give the new BMW M6 Coupe and Convertible outstanding stopping power. Its stand-out features include even lower weight, excellent feel and fade-free performance even under heavy loads.

The diameter of the inner-vented and perforated brake disks is 400 millimetres at the front and 396 millimetres at the rear. The six-piston fixed-calliper brakes at the front axle – painted dark blue metallic and complete with the M logo – are radially bolted to the pivot bearing.

The M carbon-ceramic brakes available for the first time for the new BMW M6 Coupe and Convertible (in conjunction with 20-inch M light-alloy wheels) are without parallel worldwide and take the cars’ stopping power to another new level.

The brake discs measure 410 millimetres in diameter at the front axle and 396 millimetres at the rear. Made from a new type of carbon-fibre compound ceramic, the discs boast even greater resistance to heat and combine this with significantly reduced rotating masses. The M carbon-ceramic brakes are 19.4 kg (42.8 lb) lighter than the standard-fitted items, yet the innovative material also displays exceptional resistance to wear, and the operating life of the discs is many times that of conventional equivalents.

The optional M carbon-ceramic system also sees six-piston fixed-calliper brakes at the front teaming up with single-piston floating-calliper brakes at the rear. The callipers can be identified by their special gold-coloured paint finish.

Great looking Ceramic Brake Kit, it's about time BMW got into this business. Hopefully the next M3/4 will have the option as well.

nice features, but the colors of the brakes are killing it IMO.

Why doesn't BMW offer different color calipers?

Damn! They look amazing! They must cost a fortune to change.

For an Audi S8, Audi charges aprox 10.000USD for new ceramic discs and pads all around in Sweden.

I wouldn't want either of those two colors... They're also still putting one of the current style fugly looking calipers in the rear

i would consider myself a sporty driver, and i take all my cars to the race track.

so this is fantastic news for me.

Cars get heavier and get more horsepower all the time, i always thought someone forgot about good brakes.

On my C63 AMG the brakes will fade on the Hockenheim Racetrack after 4-5 laps...which is ridiculous

Probably cost around $10k in Canada. They sure look good. Not sure about the caliper color though.

Well, how many M6 owners track their cars? This is certainly more for bling factor, even though I believe it will have performance upgrades.

If it were on the M3, I would think it will be abetter application.

I like both colors of the calipers, but if you're all about performance the color won't matter!!!!!!! Can't wait for reviews...

Not in Canada it won't. You guys in the U.S. ha e purchasing power so you have a good chance at that.

Up north we get raped for every little thing...unfair, but that's the price of
Commercialism I guess

This brake option also comes with a mouth guard to protect your teeth from the steering wheel when you slam on the brakes haha

Finally BMW offers a proper steel setup.

The carbon ceramic is completely useless on this car. These cars will not see the track use that calls for carbon brakes. Only needed for long hard sessions, to keep brake temps down.
