High Speed Manual Shifting

2016 M6 Grand Coup

I've noticed that at high speeds (above 80 miles per hour) like on the freeway, when shifting manually, the gear changes are NOT smooth as they are at lower speeds and RPMs where you really don't hear or feel anything.

In other words, the car makes a noticeable thud noise and SLAMS into gear. It doesn't feel healthy.

I'm asking fellow drivers if you feel a noticeable difference in the way your car shifts in manual at lower speeds (below 70 miles per hour) v.s. higher speeds. Should I be worried?

Highly recommend you take it to the dealer and have them diagnose this. Mine certainly does not slam into gear during high speed shifts.

IMO it's not an issue. Transmission computer constantly is learning how you're driving and thinking based on speed and throttle position you want a fast shift.

You can try to do a reset of the logic at the dealership. But IMO, it's normal and I am amazed how intuitive MDCT is based on how I want the car to shift (in manual and auto).

Also if you've ever driven a manual before, you'll know in certain engine speeds you cannot shift smoothly. It's just not how it's technically designed.

Thank you for the reply's. I really appreciate it. I guess I just want know if something that all your cars are doing.

Maybe Next time you have some open road go into manual mode and gun it and play around with the shifter above 80 mph and see if the car jolts when you up-shift.

That's exactly what happens in my DCT M6 and my 6MT M3 when you're applying throttle at high engine and wheels speeds.

Test this and you'll see the DCT drive logic estimates what's a performance shift (hard) or a standard shift (soft).

1. Cruise at a constant vehicle speed at 4k rpms, completely let off throttle and shift up - soft shift

2. Floor the throttle at the same gear, and at the same vehicle speed as #1 above, shift up while keeping throttle pressure - hard shift

if the shift is too harsh you can adjust the shift speed with the bottom in the middle console.
