6 Series Coupe is discontinued

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I noticed recently when playing around with the BMW USA configurator, it was no longer giving options for the 6-Series coupe, only the convertible and grand coupe. I thought this was odd, but now according to Road & Track, BMW stopped building the coupe back in February.

This is probably going to be a one-off situation for the 2018 model year, because when 2019 comes around, BMW will sell the 8-Series coupe (or whatever they end up calling it).

Others had mentioned this, but I have yet to see anything in the way of official confirmation.

No doubt it is currently not being built, but unless there is some official word (which may very well exist in the form of a dealership memo) it could still potentially return later this year (as noted by R&T - that's unknown). The M3 is currently facing that type of situation right now (in North America only), so it's not out of the question. On the flipside - we never saw any memo about a 6 Series coupe delay either. With the M3 we did see such a notice given.

That being said, I would not be surprised if it were genuinely gone for good. It sold in small numbers. And what other BMW could have gone two months without being in production with almost no one thinking twice about it (or discussing it)? But that being said, I would not necessarily expect the new 8 Series to be released as early as next year. It might happen, sure. However, with the X2, X4, and 3 Series Sedan launching then, it seems crowded already. I suspect it will come 2019 as an MY2020 at the earliest. Although 2019 looks set to be crowded with new BMW launches as well - 1 Series hatchback, 3 Series Touring, X5 - maybe more ("Z5"?).

BMW, Coupe, and two ton weight should never go together unless it's ultra lavish

Exactly! Must be ultra lavish. The out going 6er was always nice but never what I thought it should be

The coupe has still been built, theres a few with dates dated today and there's one after it too with no date meaning it will be built 5/10 or 5/11.

GA05266
GA05267

They could be just last minute orders placed sometime earlier this year, so who knows. The last M6 was built 4/28 - D934868

It's a legend. Especially the gran coupe which introduced a new design language and a new sling back couoe sedan form for bmw in China.

This car will rightly have a place in bmw history in gran coupe form.

A sad day for us. I think the 6 series was one of the most beautiful cars in the market and the best looking in BMW's current lineup

Good decision.

I can't remember the last time I saw a 6er coupe. The Gran Coupe, however, is very popular.

No 2-door BMW should be a hefty and ungainly boat besides a 7-series coupe (8-series?) aimed square on at the S-class coupe.

Either make a performance-oriented 911/AMG GT competitor under the 6er moniker or shelve it altogether.

Except nobody ever said the Gran Coupe was being discontinued.

But yes, this body style will certainly go down as one of the GOAT BMW designs.

I love my car. I've got better, faster, pricier cars after my 6er but nothing looks quite as good or does everything so perfectly. And the sedan ain't bad but it's way too common here in Dubai - glad I got the proper coupe.

This was one of the most beautiful BMW's built. The interior was one of the most original, elegant, and beautiful designs that BMW ever offered. It was the definition of how BMW should make the interiors. I always loved this interior and I believe that even today following the same recipe BMW will have a winner.

Best car I ever owned. Still can't bring myself to change it, even if it's been around much longer than I usually keep cars. Absolutely love every drive, and that interior is still unmatched, by anything out on the market currently.

I adore the 6 series, such beautiful and elegant lines. Will surely be missed but bring on the new 8 series

A lot of people moan about the number of models BMW have, but it will be odd to see a gap between 5 and 7.

It was a beautiful car in its day, but it was very expensive and very heavy. This duty makes sense going to the 8 series.

I hope BMW takes the opportunity to do something bold and radically different again with the 6er, and yes, whilst the rumoured 911 competitor is probably pie-in-the-sky it doesn't hurt to dream big and aim high. Shedding 300 - 400 kg and looking for sports car dynamics would be a great start.

I have checked a bunch of other countries and it still seems to be offered everywhere else. I wonder if it is US only.

If it (the successor) is meant to play oppo to the S coupe, it's already there in anything but the name. The fit, finish, design, refinement, interior design and the driving dynamics of a 650i doesn't leave anything on the table compared to the current S coupe, IMHO.

If so, like I say above, it would be a very similar situation to the M3. It, too, ended in February. In that case, though, we know it's coming back in July. For the 6 and M6 coupe, it's not clear if they will be returning to the US market or not.
