F12 suspension question
Hello all, I am a newly-joined bimmerpost member. I am a long-time 5 series owner (currently drive a 2019 540i MSport) in the early stages of thinking about picking up an F12 for a weekend car. I've long thought that these cars are among the most beautiful on the road but I need to convince my wife of the need for a convertible. Specifically thinking about a 2015-2017 650i.
My questions are these: 1) I am used to ordering MSport on my 5 series to get the 704 sport suspension. Based upon my read of the forums, it seems that the MSport does not impact the suspension setup of the F12. Is that correct? 2) Is there any difference in suspension between the Xi and RWD? I think I read somewhere that the Xi is about 1 inch higher but not sure if that translates to a cushier ride or not. I may be able to answer these questions myself if someone can point me toward the build sheets. Thanks in advance for the help. Look forward to getting to know you guys. |

Unfortunately...one of the forums that had all of the ordering and pricing guides for the f06/f12/f13 has dead links for the PDFs that were full of info.
In regards to the sport suspension...I'm not sure if the non M models have the 704 sport suspension due to many of them (especially the f06 which I'm more familiar with) having the option of DDC (dynamic damper control) which is option code 223a and adapts electronically to road conditions (similar to the old BMW EDC systems)...or AD (adaptive drive) which includes active roll stabilization. In regards to AWD & RWD models...if you enjoy the "classic" BMW handling characteristics...then you may appreciated the AWD (xi) models since the steering on those models also utilizes some hydraulic steering input to the electronic steering. The RWD only models only have electronic steering which some old BMW'philes complain about the "numb" steering feel. I have a 2015 F12. You are correct that MSport is just decorative on an F12. You have only two suspension choices - but only one as a practical matter. All of them have active dampers - shocks that adjust stiffness to bumps. But an option was available called Adaptive Drive. Adaptive Drive added active sway bars - called ARS. There is a motor in the middle of the sway bars that twists them in turns and corners to keep the car flat. The problem is that Adaptive Drive is super rare (in the US anyway). My car has it, and I know of one other F12 on here from Canada that does, but I'd be really surprised if there is a single one for sale in the country with it.

I have a 2017 f12. You may want to read the thread here on "vibration" at 1500-2000 RPMs. Those of us that have experienced the problem all have the M Sport Package I believe. Just something to consider. I would be leary of any CarFax that indicates multiple services for vibration or wheel alignment (typically what they start with). The actual problem is in the torque converter for most.
