Locking Wheel Nut - Bmw 640d F13

Hi All,

Apologies if this is a daft question....How do I find out what number Locking Wheel Nut I have?

My locking wheel nut broke and need a replacement, my wife’s X6 locking wheel nut has a number on it (60 if I remember correctly) but mine doesn’t (Her’s doesn’t fit my car ) There is a purple sticker on the back of that is of any relevance.

Thanks for your help folks.

Dan

Don't think any number on the key will get you a new key. Find a 12 point socket that will not quite fit over the lock. Hammer it on the lock and you should be able to unscrew the lock.

So you broke the tool to remove the wheel bolts. You'll need to go to the dealer I think. They have a full set, and will find which one fits then order you one. They might be able to do it by VIN as well, but not sure.

Yup afraid so, always felt not right since I’ve got the car.

Was thinking the dealer was my only option since it doesn’t have a number on it.

Thanks

A few years ago the tire shop where I had my summer wheels fitted back on lost the very same nut. I called my local BMW dealer and they said I should go by with the car. So I visited them and someone took the full box of these nuts (different sizes of course) and tried a couple until he figured out the one that fitted. Based on this hands on test I was then able to order a new one which the tire shop accounted for. Thus I would also say a dealer visit is unavoidable.

As others already stated...IF you have BMW locking wheel bolts. The dealership should have a full set...and hopefully the service shop will assist in finding the correct one...then you can order it.

I got a new locking nut from this site a few months back after I broke mine. Came within a week and cost a snip compared to dealer prices (£42 plus p&p)

I always thought locking nuts were unique like the set of keys to your home.

If duplicates are available online i dare ask what's the point?

i hear ya. i consider it more as a deterrent for an opportunistic thief cruising your neighborhood as opposed to a motivated one that knows what they are doing. i've taken off my own aftermarket locking nut when i didn't have my key on me, so none are that secure

Garage List
2022 BMW IX  [0.00]
I just went through this process a month ago. Car place used a rattle gun on my wheels and stripped out the clover shape on the lock nut. Not even BMW could get it out. Eventually took it to a place that got it out by welding a blob of metal onto the nut and then hammering a regular socket over it.

BMW here in NZ told me that they replace the locking nuts as standard practice since they are more trouble than they are worth.

Agree... Bin them and just fit a normal bolt....
They are made of cheese and are not fit for purpose....
There are only several types... BMW mechanics will hold All the keys...

The locking bolts sound great, but they are a pia. a Good shoop isn't even slowed by them. The gorilla on the gun either uses a tool designed to tear into these and unscrew, or they hammer on a disposable socket. I have even heard of these guys not ever bothering with the key and just using the tool on them. Most shops that see a nice new BMW won't let apes near them, but that's what they do to the Corollas of the world.

Cause for it is the torque. These are supposed to be torqued relatively lightly, but nobody wants a wheel to fall out, so they max out their guns every time.

Yeah must have been torqued up to hell. Phoned bmw and got a new key. Took car to a garage and they broke the new key lol

Took to a different garage and they got it off with a bit of heat.

Definelty ditching them.

Thanks for all the advice

My garage specialist applies a little bit of the suitable grease on all wheel bolts when switching from summer to winter tyres and vice versa. So far I never had any problem with either car.
