This 6'er looks so much better than the Merc! Not even a contest, besides the way BMW's drive is superior to Mercedes...end of story..I'll personally take mine black on black M version please! (have to make more $, 1st though)

this car isn't even supposed to compare with the XJ L (and even if it did, this 6 would blow it out of the water). that's the 7's job... also the XJ L is HIDEOUS imo.

The 6 gran coupe looks amazing and is a much better alternative than the 7, especially since they watered down the 7 lineup with the 740i which can be had for the price of an M3 with a few options (there goes the exclusivity due to pricing).

What's the issue? 4-door coupes get even numbers too. There will be a 4 door 4 series coupe and quite possibly a 4 door 2 series coupe also. It makes perfect sense - well to the extent that calling a car with four doors a coupe makes sense. But you can't blame BMW for that one, they are just staying in the game with Mercedes and others.

By the way, don't count on a 1 series sedan, at least not for the F2x generation.

4-series = coupe and vert version of 3er
5-series = sedan, touring, and GT
6-series = coupe and vert version of 5er
7-series = sedan

WTF is a 4-door version of the 6er doing being referred to as a 6-series? Shouldn't it be a 9-series or something?

BMW is about to f-up its own nomenclature...

I was recently at my local BMW dealership and saw a 650i convertible for $101,000; it is becoming insane. However, in order to be competitive, the 650i Gran Coupe needs to have a similar price to the CLS550 since their specs are so close.

CLS550 - $71,000 with 402 horsepower and 443 torque
CLS63 AMG - $95,000 with 518 horsepower and 516 torque

For comparison sake, an E550 is $57k base vs $71k for the CLS550. The 550i is $60k base so I'd expect a similar premium just for the pretty body.

I was eagering waiting for this so I was willing to forget its now not so impressive design compared to the cooler gran coupe prototye. but now I remembered the existence of a thing called quattroporte and I decided not to forget the shameless efforts of bmw to make his own model unattractive so they can later charge more for the m versions. we know they can make em cooler as the gran coupe and previous prototypes proved but then they try hard to make em look bland.and then we customers have to spend a lot of money trying to compensate for the lack of coolness of our bimmers. I wont stand it anymore, no sir!!! Ill buy a car designed to look the best it can.as I see it thats the proper way of caring for customers and their satisfaction.
I know it will drive like no other but the quattroporte is a better car overall, and I know a 6 series gran coupe wont stand a chance when it comes to luxury and stealing attraction from girls . is like comparing a rolls to a 7 series, the 7 series may even perform better but wont stand a chance against his more luxury oriented brother.
edit: by the way, wouldnt an m version of this car steal the crown and heritage of the m5 as the best performance sedan? ooops sorry, I forgot, this isnt a sedan...

Handsome sedan.

I still think this is what the 5 series should be...

CLS is more of a 7-series competitor.

Is it just me or does the sloping front grill give it a bit of an anteater profile?

Growing on me, but doesn't this throw off the rumored "coupes become even numbered cars, sedans stay odd-numbered?" Which never made sense to me anyway, for a multitude of reasons...

Hopefully that rumor was just a rumor, if it aint broke, BMW, don't fix it!

As for the CLS, it looks AWESOME! For about 5 minutes, then it looks aged, its too flashy and in your face, then you just get bored with it. BMW usually releases models that "age" better than Benz IMO...

I'll hold final judgment for official pictures, but like I said, its growing on me.

I have to disagree. I think the XJ L has more sporty slick personality than the 7 series. The 7 series is more in the ring with the lexus LS 460,, mercedes S class and Audi A8. All pretty boring and monolithic. My impression is the 6 series GC also pushes the slick sporty personality, similar to the CLS and Audi A7. Obviously these are all just my opinions, and that's how I would cross shop myself. The XJ L is an impressive sight in person.

So, BMW gets in the 4-door coupe mix too. I must say Gran Coupe looks even more beautiful than new CLS. I have never been a fan of A7 anyway.

I can't wait to see this without the camo.

I agree. If the Gran Coupe came out when the last-gen CLS came out, I'd give it to BMW (the last CLS was ugly) but the new one with the improved front and back-end makes the CLS work this time and I usually don't like Mercedes and their styling.
