Mavis tire center screwed up my oil pan during oil change
Just like the title states ...I was driving my way home and decided to stop into mavis to get my daily oil change.. oh what a mistake this is turning out to be .. looks like the dweeb that worked on my car messed up the threads in my oil pan ..so now looks like it's going to cost me 3k to replace my oil pan !!!!!! Never again .. my mistake and now it's going to cost me.. my question to u guys .. has anyone experience anything like this on there 6 series? Was reading about helicoils.. not sure if that's a option but definitely want to hear of anyone that had experience with a similar issue .. thanks

First question is why are you paying for it and not them? And how did you discover it happened? And I'm sure others will ask why you would take your car to such a place.
To answer your specific question, I have not seen this issue on here before, but there is nothing particularly unique about a 6 or even a BMW. So general research on solutions for messed up oil pan threads will do. Like most things, I think the solution depends on the actual condition of the threads. If they were just cross threaded, I would try tapping with the correct thread tap and see how they look. If they were totally stripped by over tightening, then your solution is either a helicoil, tapping out to the next larger bolt size, or a new pan. Tapping to a larger size would be the ideal solution since you then have new threads. I have used helicoils for things like bolts holding on a sway bar and they work fine. But I was always careful to not overtighten bolts that used them. Since I gather you do not do your own work, I'd consult with an established indy shop or two and see what they suggest. |

Are you SURE you need a new pan? I only ask because these horror stories have been around for decades (which is why you will usually see negative comments about the quick drive-in lube joints). In the past...the drain plug may be messed up...but its by design because the drain plug's threads are usually a softer material than the threads of the pan...and when crossed threaded...the plug may be damaged, but the threads in the oil pan aren't.
Just double check to see if all you need is a new oil drain plug. Good luck.

This kind of failure often does not occur due to one event. It is a series of events, or in your case, daily visits to Mavis. Sorry, could not resist.
My BMW dealer always has service specials on oil changes. The highest I have ever paid for an oil change is $110, the least was $49. Yes, full synthetic. Perhaps that would be a future consideration. I try to learn from others misfortunes, life is too short for me to make them all on my own. L |
