3G Gone

Just got an email saying that because AT&T will be shutting down the 3G network that pre-2016 BMWs will no longer have BMW Connected.

My thinking is that instead of throwing us under the bus and saying ‘Oh well...” BMW should offer a free or at least low cost upgrade. The only thing I really ever use is the real time traffic info. It will annoy me to lose this, but: “Oh well...”

I had a 2005 330ci M sport which was stolen from a restaurant valet in 2018. I thought ok, fuckers, and called BMW and said “find them!”

They apologized and said that the cell providers no longer supported the 2g network so they couldn’t trace the car.

Come on BMW! Get your shit together! Why continue to design the same mistakes into the cars?

I’ve actually been annoyed that I don’t have apple car play anyhow. When the 3g runs out in February 2022, I’ll probably just get a new car.

Yeah, this kind of pisses me off too. A car that can still be under factory CPO warranty is put out of date is chicken shit.

It kinda feels like they built in a timer to make my power seats stop working. I wonder if it will affect resale prices at all - "How's the technology?" "Oh it's a bit like having a cassette player with a convertible top." I bought RTTI every year but can't say I ever used it for anything functional and its "real time" aspect seemed to be a bit of a stretch as I looked at an empty road that was yellow on my screen. I never looked at weather or the news except to laugh at how the synthesized voice pronounced things when she read the news to me. The only function I used regularly was the online search function where I would ask for the nearest Home Depot or Mexican restaurant or hotels in the town ahead on a road trip. Siri substitutes perfectly for that, but I liked that my car could do it. It will be a lesser car.

I’m really surprised this doesn’t garner more attention. Your service calls you receive from the dealer is because your car is reporting it to them. That’s money in the bank for dealers as they make more on service than on sales.
Let’s face it, you spend more when you feel like you are being taken care of.

Here's a much better explanation of the issue than the piece BMW put out.

https://www.lightreading.com/iot/ata.../d/d-id/765442

The technology that supports the communication aspect of CIC or NBT is/was on a 3G AT&T platform that goes back to 2001. AT&T began upgrading it in 2009 to 4G, and then in late 2019 to 5G. The CIC/NBT Connected platform was obsolete the day it was installed in the first BMW.

The very definition of planned obsolescence.....

I got the email as well. I just paid for an extension of the RTTI a few months ago. Email said that until the date of expiration, I can enjoy the all the features the system has to offer even if i did not pay for them.

I'd rather keep my RTTI. Especially on Long island and the 5 boroughs, it was a huge help.

I just got back from my oil service and brake fluid exchange at the dealer. Not sure if it made much of a difference, but, I did tell everyone around about the craziness of loosing these features because of the 3g shutdown. I challenged them to find a solution by the next time I come in, which will be just after the 3g loss.
They also claimed to have opened a ticket about it too.

LOL, while I’m sure they were thinking that, they didn’t have the balls to say it.

Is this only for NA where AT&T resides? What about EU and/or Asia markets?

I have no idea about that. But I just wondered: Does this mean that our clocks will not automatically adjust?
