New to M6 and BMW
I'm new to the M6. Always wanted one and I couldn't pass it up knowing it was out of production. I purchased a 2016 M6 with competition package. Anyone have any tips on driving or operating the car? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Congrats on the new car. Just don't go crazy before the engine is warmed up, configure your M1 and M2 buttons and learn to use the paddle shifters if you enjoy that kind of experience.
For 'normal' driving the grandma mode works well. This means choosing 'efficient' / 'comfort' / 'comfort' on the settings. Buy a quart of full synthetic 0w30 engine oil, you'll need it sooner or later, the M6 likes to drink some oil. You'll get a warning when the level is low. |

Thanks. Its much appreciated. Biggest adjustment is getting use to the power and the many customizations. So far, best driving experience of my life. Thanks again.

Great choice of car
It seems obvious but I do suggest reading through the owners handbook and checking out all the controls. The M6 does have some unusual features and , unless you're had one before, the DCT box takes a while to get used to. |

Go and have wheels aligned! And not by BMW dealer, find someone who knows what they do, including the difficult part (rear wheels in our cars) - makes a massive difference in how it drives.
Beautiful car, I had a Singapore Grey 2014 Coupe before my current SMB Gran Coupe - didn’t really want another car, but a bit more practicality... Luckily there is the GC! |

One word of warning for the comfort mode though. Since the car is so powerful, you learn to go easy on the throttle pretty quickly. Even in comfort mode, it accelerates quite well when you are moving from a standstill, so you go easy on it. However, it becomes "extra lame" when you are in highway speeds (6th or 7th gear). So, when you want to 'quickly' change lanes or overtake, you end up using your muscle memory to lightly use the throttle, expecting it to pick up speed as it always goes. But, it will surprize you as it just sits there in 'Prius-mode' not doing much, putting you in a very precarious position. This has happened to me on a couple of occassions and it is quite nerve-wrecking! Like someone else mentioned, set up those M1/M2 buttons, ideally M1 as "this may kill me" and M2 as "spirited driving that I can use to overtake quickly". Then, get into a habit switching to M2 before trying to make quick overtakes or lane changes Interesting. Can you ellaborate on dealer not doing a good job with alignment? I suspected that my wheels are wearing a bit unevenly in the front, so I asked my dealer to check the alignment. They said it was okay ... hmm.

I have to agree with MelbourneFinn, I do my alignment at a tire shop. I have the impression that at some stealer the mechanics sometimes sponge bod’s brother.

The other reason to find someone who knows what they do is that dealers would just use BMW factory recommended values, but both axles having adjustment, a knowledgeable technician can adapt the settings to your driving habits/conditions, and still be within tolerances. If the technician doesn’t ask you any questions (what do you prefer, how do you use the car etc.) go away and find someone else... Hope this helps. |

How many miles did the vehicle have on the date purchased? Thorough inspection of belts and hoses is recommended.
As a side note, the vehicle does not appear to have carbon ceramic brakes (or CCB). Replacing CCB brakes on both axles will cost north of $9K. Regular brakes are just fine for daily driving. |

It has regular brakes. I researched the difference between the regular brakes and the CCBs both replacement cost and performance, finding the CCBs were unnecessary. Thanks for your input. |

Before I bought the car the selling BMW dealership changed the rear tyres because of extra wear in the inside of the tread. Hopefully this will be a clue. I seem to recall that this is not uncommon on the M6 but maybe a camber adjustment will help. We'll see |

My tip is always drive in manual and off course MDM, with the transmission in mode 3(quickest). So, my settings are Sport plus for throttle (who wants to get less than optimal acceleration), comfort mode for suspension around town ( sport or sport plus in the twisties) and comfort steering around town with adjustments for twisties to sport plus.
Take your time and learn how the car reacts, especially with inclement weather. Enjoy! |
