80 bags of eucalyptus mulch delivered yesterday. Heat index at 102 already. Gonna take a couple of days to get all the bags down.

Mostly due to big beds. Actually takes 120 bags to do everything when it really needs it. I usually have lawn guys do it right before Christmas but they did a terrible job last year and I couldn’t deal with seeing bare spots anymore. I got through 39 today and almost finished the front before the heat got to me. Need to start super early tomorrow a.m.

Smile

If you are familiar with this delicate flower, you know how beautiful but difficult it is to grow. Especially in this blistering Texas heat!

But I was indeed able to save this one.

Not really a yard freak myself, but my wife loves to tinker with it. I have hundreds of photo's of her flowers and the yard over the last 15 years we have been here.

just spent a pretty good deal of time the last 3 days in the yard. de thatched, aerated and did some overseeding using GCF's blend of tall fescue with some starter fertilzer to get it off on the right foot

^ That looks like a lot of work. I’m done for now until temps moderate in late Sept or early October.

So I've been doing a lot of work trying to restore the yard from the previous owners for about 6 months and have been feeling pretty good and pleased with the work I've put into it. I was traveling for about 2.5 weeks and couldn't tend to the yard. Typically keep it at about 3".

Well, during that time we got a ton of rain and humidity with high temps. Had some spots at about 8" (!!). Well, turns out I've got some type of fungus I didn't know when I started cutting and proceeded to spread it to my entire yard since I don't bag this time of year.

I was thinking Gray Leaf, but I'm not really seeing any spots on the blades. The blades are a mixture of a hazy yellow, purple, brown, and gray. It. Looks. Like. Hell.

I also saw a few of these almost foamy looking pods around the yard.

Anyone have any ideas on what this is? I stopped by the local extension office for UF's horticulture department and spoke with a guy that was super helpful. Going to work with him to get things resolved as well as soil testing. Of course I didn't have any pictures, and it was all conversation, but do you guys think this can be handled with a Home Depot run with a generic fungicide? Pictures are a "before" from just a few weeks ago to this morning.

Could be that or brown patch I’m not sure. I have always used a stuff from Home Depot (Disease-X) when I see signs of a problem, but have not treated areas that large. I would rely on the local extension office to diagnose and advise before throwing anything on it. Good luck!

Also for the foamy stuff, look into Spittlebugs. We don’t have them down here but was just reading about them a little after seeing your pic.

I DEFINITELY have these. I have never seen them before and never knew about them (recently moved to North Florida from Atlanta) - I just figured they were just some stupid bug going around. Can these be the bastards that are killing my grass?! This explains why I cannot find fungi symptoms that match mine if so...

I don’t know much about them other than briefly reading the article I posted. The UF extension office should be able to help figure out a plan to remédiate but at least you know you have a pest issue to address. When are you going back to talk to them?

Went in person yesterday, but we’re emailing at this point. Shot over a load of pictures this morning and brought up the spittlebugs. I think you’re dead on with what’s going on. Turf damage descriptions match closer than anything I’ve been able to find. Hope to hear back Monday.

So yes, spittlebugs, but not what is causing the damage. Maybe a slight amount, but nothing to warrant concern. Let 'em ride for now and focus on the real problem: take-all root rot.

Got with my buddy that owns a pro pesticide and herbicide distribution company and he sent me over a 30lb bag of granules with 0.31% Azoxystrobin and 0.75% Propiconazole after working with the horticulture department over at UF. Just finished spreading at about 3.75 lb / 1000 sq ft with a gentle rain coming down as I was finishing up. Perfect application

Let's see how she do!

Curious as to what you guys are using for weed prevention. I've tried a few with no luck and also used weed barrier and even then they'll still pop through.

Hmm I'll have to look into that. I got so frustrated with the amount of rain here in FL this summer that I didn't even both pulling the weeds .

One thing that I have yet to try is using vinegar. I've heard mixed reviews about it.
