Considering an early '13 M6 Coupe

Hello all,

I am seriously considering adding an M6 beast to the stable. Main use case would be long highway drives in central Mexico. I currently drive an E60 M5, an E46 M3 and a 1M as well as my wife's X5 5.0.

I love my E60 M5 on those long, fast drives and it has been a good car (I would keep it). But that car of course carries a good bit of reliability worries. I got it with 29K miles 4 years ago, now approaching 50K miles. It's been good other than DSC pump and SMG pump replacements. Had the work done at indies and the DSC pump rebuilt so I've spent about 4K total on unscheduled repairs so far. It currently is in excellent shape.

But I think M6s are hitting a nice spot with depreciation and I love the shape. This particular car is a '13 coupe singapore grey/red interior being sold by a local BMW dealer with 13K miles total and a 1 year CPO warranty listed for 47K.

Thoughts? Can I get say 30-40K miles of relatively reliable high speed highway driving from it? Has anyone here come from a V10 M5 (or M6).

What should I look for on a '13 car?

Got my '13 M6 on July 2017 with 28k miles. Now I'm approaching 49k miles without any issues at all, I do change my oil every 5k miles tho. The car has been out of warranty since I got it but so far so good! I think you should be fine as long as you take a good care of it!

Its a very solid car. I wouldn't worry too much. I've owned many ///M and never had any major problems with any of them. This is BMW's ultimate driving machine and its engineered to last.

I would never own one of these w/o a warranty. Just this year I had a wire fray in the seat (poor design) fixed (labor intensive), one air mass sensor replaced and a valve cover gasket replaced (car runs so hot fans stay on for 20 minutes after shutting down, Mike Miller suggested popping hood).

Plus rare but several engine failures posted here.

I moved on from V10 M6, F13 is definitely quicker and more fuel efficient but I still miss the feel of high revving V10. It just felt more exciting and response was instant after doing alphaN mod which got rid of maf's. V10's need the conrod bearings replaced otherwise they become a time bomb after certain mileage, there doesn't seem to be any issues with the v8 to that degree so im happy about that.

While I do like the feel of how the V10 drove, I still like my F13 better. Has a lot more usable power for day to day drive without going nuts. looks better (imo) and drives better despite that it weighs more. love the diff too.

I agree about the warranty, very wise. 20 minutes seems a long time for the fans to run after switch off. Unless you really caned it! High ambient temperature where you live? What's oil temp before shut off? Even during the unusually hot summer we're currently enjoying in the UK, mine shuts off after 5 to 10 minutes...

BMWRog, seems like 20, may be less, though I am in South Florida so 90+ all the time. Oil temp never seems to go above 205 or so.

I'm in the same boat with fan running about 15 minutes after shutdown (both my blown engine and the brand new engine used the fan after). Oil temps run normal at about 200-205. Ambient temps around 90F here in Georgia so it's hot now, but my fan runs after year round, even in cool weather.
I would not own this beast without extended warranty covering at least power train as I'm one of the few unlucky ones that blew engine.

You guys have third party warranty? If you guys do, which company do you guys use? How much does it cost if you dont mind me asking? Thanks!

This car is hard to beat for a long distance cruiser. We got ours 26-27 months ago with 18k miles and a year left on factory warranty plus two year CPO. She's got over 50k now (been a while since I've driven its prob around 52-53k or so) and really haven't had any issues at all other than a few things fixed when we first got her. Damn fast on the interstate, all the luxury features of a 7er, spacious/comfort interior, and one thing not mentioned as much, but the suspension is FANTASTIC especially with PSS/PS4 (dump Pirelli tires immediately if the car comes with them they are TERRIBLE). Tons of trunk space even in the vert for your luggage, and then when you reach your destination you can cruise (top down) in style.

On other hand my E63 M6 had just about fallen apart before it even reached 50k miles. It got to where we didn't even want to take it outside of the city for fear of a breakdown which did happen a few times on long distance trips and is absolutely miserable to deal with. However the turbo M6 doesn't even come close to the old on on fun to drive scale they are truly in a different universe. IMO the new cars barely even feel like an ///M driven back to back with a V10 M6 or V8 M3 (I did have a 2013 M3 CP for first 5 months we had the M6 so have driven them back to back). But if you are keeping some of the cars in your profile list then that shouldn't be a huge concern as there are many areas that those cars do not touch the M6 so should make a great addition to the stable!

I went with Autopom. Their policy is 50k on top of existing miles (takes me to 78k), exclusionary policy (covers just about everything including electronics), $100 deductible, any mechanic of my choice as long as they're ASE certified, cost was about $3500 and they have a payment plan.

I went with the factory extended warranty from BMW NA. I did a previous post with detailed cost info on the various plans etc. Here's the link to my prior post:

https://www.6post.com/forums/showpos...72&postcount=7

As mentioned in my other thread, my policy has already repaid itself many times over given that I had a full new engine replacement done a couple of weeks ago which would have cost me over $40K (of course I would not buy a new engine from BMW for $30K and let the dealer install it at a cost of more than $10K, but either way I've definitely come out way ahead on this one).

I also have an extended warranty from BMW NA, which expires 10/12. Trying to decide whether to keep and get a USAA Warranty or go back to an M4.

Thanks all. Unfortunately extended warranties are not available here but at least this car has a one year CPO from BMW.

I am torn between two very different choices:

- I made an offer (17K) on this Z4M with 26,000 miles and it was already accepted, have to close or walk away on Monday:

https://auto.mercadolibre.com.mx/MLM...2007-plata-_JM

I already test drove it. It needs a little love but is mechanically sound.

- I have yet to offer on the M6:

https://auto.mercadolibre.com.mx/MLM...-coupe-aut-_JM

I may go very low on Monday with the M6. I think I would get more real use out of the M6 but the Z4M (I already test drove it) sure is fun and I don't think it will depreciate much if at all.
