A 2013 should have the updated N63TU. You can tell easily 2 ways - decode the VIN online and it will say the engine is T or TU (means the same thing). Or, open the hood and look for the filler for the coolant. On the N63, which should only be on 2012 models, the coolant filler cap is up front on the driver's side. On the N63TU the filler cap is way back in the corner near the firewall on the driver's side. Look at some pictures of 2012s for sale on eBay (eBay usually has the best pictures) and then look at some later models. Once you recognize the filler cap back in the corner from the pictures, you will be able to tell easily when you go look at the car. If the cap is in the back corner, you are good.

I am scared of ANY BMW V8, TU or not. It's a low volume and not BMW's specialty.
I drove 650 altogether for probably about an hour. It felt heavier than 640 (probably because it is, ha ha).
I do drive alone most of the time.

I have two kids, 3,5yo and 1,5yo and I would want to put them on rear seats time to time.

So, 640 and all required mods on a top of it OR 650 (very limited number of cars available)?
Are the colors really more limited on the 6 than other BMW series? Maybe, I never counted. Not including all the Individual colors that were available for extra money, there was white, silver, space gray, two different reds, a metallic bronze in some years, deep sea blue (which I have), regular black, metallic black, and carbon black (which is really a very dark blue). Those are what I can think of offhand.

N63 engine bay (coolant reservoir is up front next to the power steering reservoir...which BTW means that it is an AWD since it uses hydraulics to assist the power steering system...whereas RWD is 100% electronic steering)

N63TU engine bay (another noticeable difference is the triangular thingies on the air intake ducts next to the support bars that run from the front to the rear on each side:

Quite many times those a bit stupid moves are the bests in the end - I'm nowadays happy with my car !
I can say if I skipped 4er and jumped right to 6er I would have less concerns right now))) But, you are right for 100% they look better than run.

You may also know there are usually some other differences between a 640 and a 650 besides the engine.
Now, I am going to test drive 650 just to compare acceleration and that feeling with 640. And I am looking only for cars with these options: 2 doors, M package, comfort seats, led instrument cluster, would prefer black headliner and soft close for doors))). I do like a body and that wide armrest/tunnel between front seats. And I can't understand why they do not have an arm rest for rear seats but if you take off that middle pillow there would be a hole to a trunk or even nothing (like it was in a car yesterday, just tht fabric that trunk covered from inside).

I will list the compromises below:
1.) Sunroof: this tilts open, but does not slide. It's due to the design of the car with its sloping roof (though I think this is a poor excuse given other brands with sloping roof designs have fully functional roofs)
2.) Getting in and out the car is a hassle due to the low step in height. It takes some time getting used to getting in and out of the car.
3.) Visibility: this is due to the unique design (especially in the Gran Coupe) and the low slung interior. However, you get used to it over time. Parking is not a problem if you have the surround view cameras/rear view camera. Without this option, parking would be HELL.
4.) Weight: driving this car compared to a 3 or 4 series is VERY different. This car is not light whatsoever, and you feel it driving around town. It does feel every bit of it 4,100+ Ibs. However, the car is quite quick (both 640i and 650i) for its weight and is a TANK on the highway. And surprisingly, the 640 gets decent fuel mileage (20 city/28-9 hwy/22-23 combined).

**side note: If you are looking at purchasing a 640i, I'd highly recommend putting a Stage 1 MHD tune, in combination with an XHP transmission tune. It REALLY wakes up the 640i and makes it so much more engaging to drive. I am surprised at how much different of a driving character these 2 tunes have made. My Stage 1 tune brought the car to 360hp & 395ft lbs of torque. The car feels like a small V8 rather than a 6. Plus the shifts are lightning quick. I can only imagine what a Stage 2 would do.

Other than these issues, the car is general a good platform. Just takes a while getting used to its uniqueness.
Yes, I see your point. For me, as 6'5'', it is the same to get out of 2, 4 or 6 I use a body sill putting left hand on it))) My problem is I love with eyes but not a brain). I am pretty tall and slim, so bigger car's body looks more suitable and I am sitting surrounded with appropriate size (for my body) interior pars in 6er. In 4er I feel myself a little bit bigger than everything in a car)));

Pros:
- exterior;
- luxury interior;
- some new options and features (led cluster, soft close, m package, maybe line control);
- premium car.

Cons:
- heavy, poor acceleration (comparing to my current bm3 st 2);
- room inside, no space behind me)))) probably 2in or 5cm, in 4er i have like 4 in or 10 cm with same front comfort seats.
- sunroof(((, tilt is useless, I live in Texas and I use to drive all over the year with open roof and open side windows, literally each day unless raining.
- fear of bad luck with 650 or insufficient n55 for such body.

I can deal with acceleration by going the same way as I did for 435: charge pipe $230; downpipe $350; BM3 st 2 $0 for N55 and $600 for N63; plumb back BOV $200; FMIC $400, xHP st3 $0. So, ~$1200 and it will be running as fast as it can with stock turbo and fuel line...
You'll be fast but definitely not maxed out by any means with that setup. There is a lot more to gain on stock turbo.

Quicker, more engaging. Every time I spoke to my brother I’d tell him how much I like driving the 435. 70 cars including 9 Porsche’s and 15 years of racing.
I like the 640i car better but I like the 435 to drive better. Just put a smile on my face.

Hey! Folks!
Option a: https://corporateperks.truecar.com/u...-bmw-6-series/

Option b: https://corporateperks.truecar.com/u...-bmw-6-series/

Pros and cons please.
At the very beginning, A I can check by myself, B I would need to ask somebody to come and check onsite before I fly to pick a car and drive it back to TX.

Wow-wow-wow! This is a great thread so informational. I've experienced the issues of the N63 (2012 X5 5.0i)… when I got the 2013 650ix Gran Coupe I was afraid I purchased the same engine, and problems. Turns out I have the T/TU.

As far as performance, I feel my 650 Gran Coupe can hold its own. I've not owned or driven a 4, but I've driven 3s and owned 5s. Recently my son had a 3 series and now has an 2008 M6, again… I feel like my 650 is quicker than both of them. Just picked it up preowned in March… had local dealership checked it out and it was in such good condition they were very surprised that I didn't get it from BMW.

That being said… I think I first loved this vehicle for the look exterior & interior. I've had more that one person (male & female) tell me the car was "sexy". Also because I've always liked the 6 series from the 80's. And yeah… the tilt roof thing pisses me off too.

I drive my f06 650ix a TON = 40K per year. I ride and drive my buddy/neighbors 2017 f06 640ix several times a month.

I know some have said they don't notice a difference in power, that is just not my experience at all. They really are completely different cars to drive. One has 40% more power and gets much worse fuel economy. The power is noticeably felt all through the driving experience especially passing, the sound is also significantly different.

There has been a lot of talk and evidence of reliability issues in the 650, I haven't seen anymore issues than I have in my other performance german cars.

What a great group of P Cars! I've had the lot, less the 944's. I know what you mean on the kids late in life I sprinkled in Audi's, Volvo's, BMW's and Mercedes that all had a petrified french fry that escaped the car seat hidden in between a seat bolster.

The rugrat is now in Grad school and on her second John Cooper Works Mini Cooper, I of course am her pit crew, car manager, and head mechanic. The first was an R56, it was a great performer in between oil leaks, latest gen is sublime though.

Good on you!

So, after I test drove several cars I ended with 650 on my radar. Especially, after I tried st2 e30 map with 435. 640 much slower.

Now have one 650 that I am looking at. 2014. Less 55k miles. One owner. What should I check about engine before purchase? I will drive it 2000 mi back home and then bring to a service shop for a full inspection.
Seller is BMW official dealership.
