Exclamation 2013 650ic overheating still...looking for causes again.

ok heres deal, 650 keeps overheating in traffic only normal driving is fine its been to dealership for 3 weeks out of last 5 for overheating, covered under warranty thank god. SO heavy stop and go and sitting it overheats to the point yellow and red temp come on screen,

Dealership has replaced 2 water pumps, hoses and pressure tested over and over and no issues of course. this time I didn't even make it off lot when AC cut out and temp rose above 250 "dash oil"... So any ideas.??? SO replaced as of today they claim 3 water pumps, hoses and aux reservoir which blow open... again normal driving above 30 is prefect and ac is the first thing to go off.

How many miles on the car, and how long has it had this problem? Did it use to be fine and just suddenly started doing this? How long does it take to overheat in traffic? I have never seen anyone else complain about this issue in all the posts I've read. Have you tried googling the issue more broadly?

Thanks for responding, just started in april car has 47500 and now 49500 so on highway its totally fine. So since april and today they have done the aux res.. which totally exploded from pressure.. then next visit water pump #1 and next visit pump 2 and hoses.. so they pick it up today to bring back in.. so if your driving and get caught in traffic or stop and go its heats up pretty quick less than 15 mins I would say being generous. So today I got it back did 3 laps in neighborhood at like 15-20 mph and it overheated in 15 mins. Seems to happen alot faster with AC on.. so clear sign is the AC shuts down and starts blowing whatever the temp is outside then the temp shoots up fast.. until the yellow/red dont drive light comes on.

First, I’d get a different technician to service the issue. Sounds like he’s fixing a complex electrical issue by continuously replacing the fuse that keeps on blowing out. Not going to work...
Does not sound like a pump issue. Water is circulating between the engine and the radiator that lets it cool at highway type driving where fan cooling is not needed. Air for cooling is crossing the radiator fins at volume and velocity to adequately cool. Once slow/stop and go driving, sound like fan is not being sensed to respond to water temp to trip on and then cool. Sounds like the circuitry for coolant temp sensing and fan activation is being overlooked.
They change a pump and a hose, but you still have the same overheating in fan cooling dependent scenarios.

Heating up while sitting still, i agree with what NCG said, check the fan operation.
Also, overheating is not good for the engine block and head gaskets so I would tell them it needs to be fixed asap. A shame they can't figure this out already.

You state this is a dealership.....BMW? Are they bleeding the air out of the system properly? There is a proper and necessary procedure for this.

Here is the wiring diagram for engine cooling on a F13.

Initial components to consider for fan activation are:
Two fuses (5A for fan relay ground and 100A for fan power).
Fan relay itself.
Status of the two coolant temp sensors.

This is where I would start.
A solid BMW technician would too.

Doesn't sound like a water pump, sound like either the radiator fan isn't kicking on, due to a relay or a fuse or the radiator is clogged. My money is on the fuse tho.

Google ‘bmw indy near me’, then look for their reviews. Also post up here for indy’s near you. Not all BMW dealerships have quality service technicians. I do most of my own work, but when I don’t have the time I use a specific indy who is about an hour away. Well worth it. I don’t what your guy was doing from the info you presented.
Nevertheless, best wishes with the issue.

thanks for responding, so they claim best guy working on it LOL haaa right... I have cut and paste what you said to look for to service specialist.. I agree at this point it has nothing to do with actual cooling system. I asked them if they checked the clutch fan today. again thanks for the feedback..... will keep everyone posted..

I agree i have shut it down when it hits 250 just as it hits yellow on computer so that way they have a record of temp error code. lucky im just idling and pulled right off on side.

Did they check the thermostat? Make sure it's opening ? Might be something stupid.

It must have opened to let water to the radiator if he highway drove without overheating. If it didn’t open, even the short acceleration on the on-ramp would have raised temp right away if no radiator cooling available to the engine.

I would hope so, but you know service advisor just tells me what they tell her.. I will say she has been good about communication and I know she isnt the one fixing the car. They are too dumb to replicate it in the shop cause apparently running the car inside pick up area is probably too cool with ac to set it off . Last 2 times they were like we drove it 30 miles umm yeah on the highway.. I drive it work and back 150 round trip and its 100% fine SMH till i get struck in bridge tunnel and have to pull over.. Thankfully I have been able to test it just doing loops in neighborhood. and no damage to other parts I HOPE

Not necessarily, could be sticking open or closed, seeing the car is a 13 with lower miles, might have sat for long periods of time without driving causing it to get sticky or tough to move

True.
You would’ve thought that on pump #2 or 3 they would have thrown in a new thermostat as they were running in the blind. Easy peasy job once you take the pump off on the F13.
I have a pump fail on my E70 and a new thermostat is going in too for I consider it a ware item.

The fans immediately come to mind for me. A long while back, my wife had a VW where the fans were malfunctioning. Two fans but only one was coming on, and the car would struggle to remain cool when it was high temps as a result. Luckily, never a real problem, but I noticed it when parking one day that the fans (usually jet-engine sounding on a really hot day) were awkwardly quiet.

When parking the car after driving it at lower speeds (temps going up), do you hear the fans running on high when parking it?

Hard to say since the main fan is def.. running. would have to be the aux fan not coming on. I would have hoped back in april they would have noticed it didnt come on, on first visit..
