The fastener lock unit slides only forward to come out, thereby necessitating a rather large take down. Removing the button cover and popping them off to refinish was much easier and quicker.

Tell me about it! I can disassemble that damned centre console with my eyes closed after doing it several times for the NBT retrofit!

Wow...thanks for this...I learned something new.

I would have never thought that the buttons themselves (circled in red in pic below) were removable from the whole lock assembly (#2 in diagram). So you're saying that once the cover (#3) is popped off & removed...the buttons (circled in red) are basically "caps" that can be pried off the lock assembly? I assumed that #2 was a solid piece and only the cover (#3) and the lock assembly (#4) where removable/replaceable.

BTW, this part (#2) is an example as to why one should always look up/check part number application before buying. It looks like it would be the same for the f06/f12/f13...but it isn't. Some of the center armrest part nbrs are slightly different and will not fit universally. I believe the lock assembly (#2) for the f06 & f13 has a different part number than the one for the f12.

Yes.
Placed my thumb under the outer ‘angled’ side, and pried up. Popped right off. There is a snap on arm on the more squared, or inner aspect of the cap, but prying up from the ‘angled’ side pops it off the plastic sort of frame it sits on. This frame is very thin and is adhesed to the shaft that operates it’s function. I cracked one of the frames slightly, but realigning the cracked arm and adding a drop of crazy glue gel settled it. After re-finishing the caps, they snapped right on.

Once I had the cover off and saw the single snap on arm when aligning my eye horizontally, I knew these caps were then removable.

Excellent info...definitely going into my mental Rolodex!

I just saw an example of a 6 that had one of these buttons peeled off and I wondered about if it was something that happens on occassion like the deformation that appears on some of the leather center armrests. I'll try to see if I can find that pic and post it.

And speaking of the leather deformation on the center armrest...what in the heck causes that? Is it heat or a combination of heat & skin contact? I've started placing a towel on the armrest when I'm wearing a short sleeved shirt in case this deformation is coming from skin contact.

Yes.
Body heat over the area of focused lateral deforming pressure. This lateral drag on armrest surface from forearm will ‘softly’ stretch the leather over time. I do change the position of my right arm. Though difficult to break a habit, I’ll even drive with it.
Another thing I do for my auto leather is mineral oil. I’ve worked with a leather expert (Joanne from ColorPlus) and the trick to keeping the leather alive is to keep it from desiccating. Easy to do. My leather is always soft and shiny. When I put car to sleep for winter, leather gets oiled and covered with Saran Wrap. My 32 year old Porsche seats look and feel brand new (except for a couple of crevices which give it character).

There was talk on the Rennlist Forum about the benefits of using German made Nivea cream on the seats. Then some had posted back that it worked to well and caused the leather to sort of expand and bunch up around the stitching sites.
I keep it simple with clear, non complicated mineral oil.

Has anyone tried the BMW Leather Care Kit on the trim? I bought it the other day.

Just simple mineral oil on a soft cloth. At Walmart it will found in skin care section as baby oil.

Great job on those diffusers. Easy to fit/line up? Are the supplied fixings up to the job?

There right against the jacking points, but it makes for a good fit. Not fitting parts came with them, however its plastic to plastic so some self tapers n washers with a little adhesive and they are solid. Defo takes 2 people to fit and jack placement is a pain.

Overall good quality
