640d oil top up
Hey just wondering have any of you had to top up oil inbetween services? Also which oil ate using. I've driven 400 miles and the oil indicator has moved slightly down. Either it's burning it or I have a possible leak? No sign of any leaks visual from just lifting the bonnet and nothing on the floor both at work or at home. So not too sure. My petrol n53 liked to drink a litre every 1k. but my previous 330d e46 never needed any top ups in between and she went on till 210,000 miles before I scrapped it. Any advice be much appreciated.

not something i have experienced in my 640, any blue smoke out the back ? i also expect it would take quite a bit of oil to hit the floor as the scuff plate covers most of the engine, would try taking that off

No blue smoke as far as I can tell even when revving the engine hard stationary never noticed anything while moving. So you have never had to add oil. Hmmm. Hopefully its nothing too serious may need to have it looked at once I determine how long it takes for the engine oil low to come up.

lights come up asking for 1 litre. castrol website says 0w 30. but from reading most people like 5w 30. contacted my local dealership about this and they've booked it in for investigation as it shouldn't be using this much oil.

Took the car into bmw today to investigate, they said its the oil filter housing thats leaking and im also apparently leaking coolant (i mentioned the egr recall and they said there is nothing outstanding recall wise for my car?). I asked if bmw will kindly cover repairs as the quote ive been given is just under 2k. From a lot of reading online it seems to be a common issue with the n57.

It turned out to be the oil filter housing which apparently is a common issue on the n57 engine. The oil filter housing and the cooler housing units were changed
by the dealer even tho most just DIY the rubber gasket inside. If you Google on YouTube u will find a lot of videos. Seems to be pretty common. However no one seemed to have the issue on here. |
