C63S -> M6; hello, and random some questions

Hello M6 folks, wanted to do a quick intro. I am new to the 6-series forum but not at Bimmerpost. I've had multiple BMWs over the years, but recently wavered to AMG territory with the 2018 C63S. Great car, brutal acceleration, but I just could not get the 'feels' from it that my M4 gave me (my childhood dream car being the E30 M3 may have had something to do with that) ...

Anyway, long story short, found a decent 2015 M6 GC Sapphire Black / Black (30k miles for around 54k, well taken care of) that I liked and swapped it out with my C63S. I probably paid a few grands more than I should have, but dealers are spoiled in Seattle, everything tends to be more expensive.

So far, few observations against the C63S (even though these cars are from different classes):
  • Throttle mapping on the C63S is brutal. The M6 is incredibly fast too, but I have noticed that I need to stomp on the throttle a bit more to let the car rev a bit
  • The interior on the C63S was class. While I never liked their design language, I appreciated it a lot. I prefer simple design of the BMWs, but the M4 just felt cheap. The M6 is another story. I love the interior, even though the car is fairly old now, I think I still prefer it over the C63S - so much quality, and simplicity.
  • Sound (audio) is important to me, so including that one here as well. The standard Burmester was very crisp, I think better than the HK upgrade on the M4. However, the B&O on this thing makes it sound like Skull Candy. Needed a couple hours of calibration with a sound meter, but wow!
  • Exhaust noise - AMG. No question. Let's just leave it there before I start missing it.
  • Handling. M6 is obviously much larger. But it somehow feels as small as the AMG to me from the driver's seat. It drives like a much smaller car than it actually is, accelerates like one, and I think the tighter cabin also contributes to that feeling. But every time I try to park my car, or look at it after I've parked, is when I realize just how long and wide this thing is. But I am okay with that ... all cars have grown bigger, that's just the trend right now ... big, practical, super saloon type muscle cars. It will eventually come around when that idea is saturated, just like how the M2 is doing it.
  • Mileage. Holy crap. I've been getting 10-11 mpg mixed. (To be fair, this car has seen nothing for bumper to bumper traffic since I got it a couple days ago ... so hoping that this will go a bit up once I get to hit some clear roads) AMG was doing around 18-19, so I thought it would be comparable. Gas bill is going to suck.
  • Lastly, looks. M6, hands down. C63S looks nice from the front, but the rear is just, meh. The widening on the AMG is also not done very tastefully, and looks like an afterthought, like a wide-body kit. The M6 to me is arguably the best looking BMW, if not one of the best looking cars in its class. The dead-on side profile is probably its weakest angle as it looks a bit too long. But other than that, the front and the rear are just perfect. I don't know if the coupe makes it look better from the sides ... It is amazing how good design holds up for so long! I do like the LCI headlights better. But they were asking mid 80s for a 17 M6, not worth the price premium IMO.

That's all for now. I am sure you have seen this a lot by now, but thought I would share what I thought coming from an M4 -> C63S -> M6. I am going to daily this car, around 30-40 miles per day, 4-5 times a week. Any tips and how to keep this thing in top shape would be recommended (I have extended the comprehensive warranty to 75k miles, so no worries there). Or any design flaws that I should take extra care for?

I have also already ordered some black-out parts from IND (grill and badges). In the short term, also thinking of adding:
- CF or a painted splitter + diffuser (question about this below)
- Updated display unit (either just the screen, or an upgraded car play system depending on whether any of it voids my warranty)

Re: the CF parts, obviously, popular brands are running in the 1000s, but I saw a few that were reasonably priced (on ebay and EB motors).

https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-BMW-F06...70f6%7Ciid%3A1

Has anyone had any experience with these? Also, how hard are these to install?

Thanks!

Straight pipe & burble tune. That's how you get closer to an AMG sound

I'm a bit surprised to hear you say it feels lighter. Isn't it nearly 1,000lbs more

Yes, it is much heavier. It was a compliment to the car that it manages to feel relatively small even when it is so large/heavy. Wasn't saying it feels smaller than the AMG

if your serious about the head unit upgrade deal with bimmer-tech, its more expensive but is flawless oem form, fit, and function. I did a full retrofit and it is not hard, there is also a write up i did for it but i have yet to add in pictures.

I haven't used any of those CF parts but would guess they are ok, not great but should be able to be installed in a few hours. and a shop would be able to handle them no problem. you will not feel as bad destroying a splitter or diffuser when they are cheaper. a genuine vorstiner or other name brand will be a couple of thousand just to get scraped around and ruined. buy yourself a new one when its destroyed, they are cheap enough.

I daily mine and i do all my own maintenance. just the proper maintenance goes a long way.

Thanks for the response I did look at the bimmer-tech one, the only thing I am worried about with that upgrade, is if it voids my warranty... Also, I already have the touch controller, so I guess my install would be fairly simple? I don't care about other fancy stuff -- existing features must work, car play and the nice looking display. How much did it run you total? Also, you have a link to your write up?

For the CF parts, I think I will go with the cheaper ones. What you said makes sense ... might as well get another new set if they get scraped.

Yes, I do all the recommended maintenance on all my cars. Just wondering if this one has some sort of an Achilles heel that I need to pay extra attention to?

nice. Got some pics of the new GC?

I'm sad that how quickly this car has depreciated since I bought it. I bought a '14 GC ZCP with CPO and $8k of M Performance parts for $63k in December 2017. Just gives you an idea how much I've eaten. Though granted, I valued my base car at $58k at that time, and my MPE is easily worth even $4k today used.

Yeah, I think the M8 anticipation is dropping prices of the outgoing M6s. That being said, if I can get a low mileage M6 that was once worth 143K for barely anything, I won't complain

I am out on vacation right now ... I will post some pics when I get back. By then I will also have my black grill from IND delivered, so will look nicer .. haha

this is the link to the write up, i did way more than what your going to have to do if you decide to do the upgrade. i think you just need a screen honestly. call them up and talk to nelson, he will tell you all the parts you will need for the conversion and what it will cost based off your VIN. I don't know if it voids your warranty but i doubt any BMW tech will even notice, no one at my dealership noticed i did my upgrade going from a totally different system. but then again they didn't scan the car either. I would say since its OEM equipment designed for the car and retrofits are possible even through BMW. i would call it good. my full cost for the upgrade was $3000 but was a lot of parts and work involved, and a full coding session to make sure it all worked as intended.

maintenance wise the plugs and coils go frequently on these cars and just change your front 02 sensors if you tune your car. i buy all my parts from fcpeuro.com. their warranty is unbeatable and is hassle free. every 10k miles i pretty much do whats in the maintenance procedure.

just note that running a tune with say catless downpipes will cook those front 02 sensors so i change them every other oil change. better safe than sorry.

Great! I agree, they probably won't even notice. I will talk to Nelson and see what he quotes me.

Thanks for the heads about about maintenance. My O2 sensors were just changed. But, I will keep in mind. Looking to get some Vorstiener copy splitters/side skirts/diffusers for now

I'm married, but I could ask if my wife would entertain losing hers
