Lightbulb Android Users/Fans - Enter

I have been on Android since moving away from Blackberry back in early 2000s.
I have good friends who are Apple/Mac people, so I have played around and sampled plenty of iPhones. This is NOT a Android vs Apple thread! I just wanted to mention that.
I'm currently using Samsung Galaxy S20 and it is a fantastic device!
More excellent news for us Android users:

I started with iPhones and switched to Android several years later, and you'd have to pay me a LOT of money to switch back.

That said I'm sometimes annoyed how companies spend more time on iOS integration. Case in point - Android Auto refuses to work with my X5M. I've been over this with 2 "geniuses" who reset and restarted everything to no effect. Meanwhile a friend's iPhone connected to Carplay no problem. My best hope is next iDrive update now.

I've been using Android since the Motorola OG Droid. Currently on a Note 9 and so far nothing in the last 2 generations has made me want to upgrade. Assuming nothing happens to it, I won't be upgrading until there are some big improvements in battery or screen tech. Maybe a folding phone in a few gens after the kinks are ironed out. I don't think I will get another Samsung either due to their price creep and lack of long-term support.

Currently using 3 Android devices. A Samsung S8 for my personal cell. A Samsung S9 for my work phone. And just picked up a Samsung Tab S6 Lite. Don't see any need to upgrade myself either. Would love to see how the camera on the latest S20 performs.

The thing I'm bitter about and will probably keep me using the S8 for a long time is Samsung dropping support for their keyboard cover. I can't deal with typing on any mobile device using the touch screen keyboard. When I found out about the physical keyboard option from Samsung, I was all over it. Unfortunately, Samsung didn't market this option so it failed. I can't count the number of times people see my phone with the keyboard attached wondering if Blackberry just released a new phone. Everyone is surprised to find out it's a Samsung Galaxy and how they never heard of this. And most people have said if they had known, they would have bought the keyboard cover. It's a shame this feature was only out for 2 generations and ended with the S8.

Just like 'jmack' I'm on the Note9 - have been since it was introduced...
I can't be persuaded either to feel i need to upgrade to anything the way everything sits right now... longer battery, better camera, etc... yes... but would have to be considerably better... which I don't see that they are.

Perhaps, once 5G gets their kinks worked out... that will be the motivating factor?

imo what could bring android on the next level, is ''universal installation''

Just like windows, no mater if you have a 10yo Dell laptop or a 5000$ custom built PC tower, you CAN install win10 easily.

It only depends if your machine will be able and if you want speed.

Yes you can go XDA route, root the device, unlock bootloader and sh!it, but its NOT user friendly. It need dev supports.

And yes old phone 'could' be able to run android11. Hate this 2-3year obsolescence on the OS.
Samsung Galaxy S2, got few usable android 10 port, a 2011 phone !

I was the BlackBerry crack dealer of my group too. I converted 1/2 a company with them seeing what I could do with my BB. For 2-3 years there we can most of our exec communications with BBM. It was glorious.

I still believe if you remove app support from the equation - the BB OS was the best out there. But in this day and age - you can NOT take app support out of it and BB fumbled that one - badly.

And once BB switched to Android and taught me how to use it - I had no further use for them. Sad story really, but it is what it is. I still have my super old curve in a draw somewhere I find occasionally and remember how I would type out multi page emails on it almost as fast as I could on a PC.

Now I voice to text almost everything as virtual keyboards just don't work for me.

I used to be a flagship Samsung the day they came out or die, but I held onto my S9+ for long enough to get that money wasting bug out of me and just finally went with the S20 FE. Still a nice upgrade over the s9+, but at 1/2 the cost of a flag ship. Guess I'm getting old and specs don't impress me anymore - especially when they don't change my experience much.

What good is bragging about gigabit internet if all you do is watch Netflix with it? LOL

Had no idea. Haven't tracked Blackberry for a long time. Good to know.

Here's the keyboard cover I've been talking about:

https://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/mo...j-cg950bbegww/

The nice thing is the keyboard is detachable giving me the ability to access the full length of the screen. And the keyboard does not require batteries. The only thing I have a gripe with is that some times the key strokes don't register exactly right. It's minor and I've learned to work around it when it does happen. And the keyboard is not back lit but that's what I get for not having the keyboard being powered. Since it's not powered it doesn't pair to the phone via Bluetooth.

I started with Handspring when the phone was a add on module. Then proceeded to Palm and was with them until the iPhone 3g came out. It aggravated the hell out of me. I then moved on to my first Android, the Samsung Moment. Since then I have 18 other Android phones from multiple different manufacturers, an iPhone 7, and a couple Blackberries.

I wanted to try a windows phone but they blinked out of existence faster than I could get one.

Phones have incredible capabilities these days but I still hate the form factor that the first iPhone introduced. Too fragile and thin with little area to hold and maintain a positive grip. And onscreen keyboards pale in comparison to physical ones but 85% of people today have never had the experience because they arrived at the smartphone post iPhone introduction so they like them fine.

I also right now really loathe notches and hole punches in screens and the disappearance of the headphone jack. I have been using (and prefer) bluetooth headphones for more than 10 years (started using the Motorola S9 shortly after it launched) but i have more than once run into the occasion where I could have really used it.

On the positives, battery life across the board has been incredible, charging speeds are fast, mobile data is quick and the cameras have been amazing and indispensable.

I just picked up an S20 - it's quite a bit chunkier than my s8 and so far I dont see the advantage other than the camera. I do like how it can charge other Qi devices though.

My job makes me use an S20+, I rub it against my iPhone to charge both in my pocket on the go but I'm pretty sure that'll eventually nuke my sperm count or something.

I'm still an iOS user primarily, as an iPad/Mac/iCloud user who bought in early it was just too much of a pain to detach from the eco system and the integrations.

The S20 camera makes my iPhone X camera looks super dated though...will wait for the iPhone 12 hype to die down then consider upgrading.

Stick to Android since beginning, had Nokia with Symbian in between and a Blackberry until the end of 2018. iPhones are for me just lifestyle and gadgets for too much money.

Same as OP...had the blackberry storm, then moved to the galaxy 3. Never looked back (though, my company requires iPhone, so I have both)

Had the Galexy 4 and 5. Samsung Note 4 and Note Edge - rooted all of these.

Went to the Google Pixel...then jumped to the LG v40, now have the dual screen LG v60

Note Edge was probably my favorite...v40 was really good too. Wish both were a little smaller.

Will state that Apple car play beats Android auto...though AAs gotten a little better with their last release

ive had android phones for personal use since the very beginning, and use an iphone for work.

Prefer the android over the iphone by a long shot. really the only reason i have both is so i dont accidentally pick up the work phone for late night internet surfing

That being said, i am pretty tech and phone savvy, but my parents and in laws are not, and I feel like im always helping my mom and mil figure out their phones (androids) and my dad and fil never seem to have issues (iphones). The iphone can be a pretty dumbed down version so seems to be better for those that cant understand tech.
