We are batting down the hatches here in the DALLAS, TX area. Expecting brutally cold temperatures that will freeze over all the rain we are getting now.
I pray the power grids hold this time...

Looks like "Cancun Cruz" has been pressured to return from his flight out of Texas to California, due to mounting pressure and ridicule. Try to escape from the very state of Texas which he was elected as a Senator. He's such a spineless coward.

We have some snow coming, but it'll be light and easy to clear. But the cold is going to be brutal. At least we won't be dealing with the ice storm that's going to slam the area south of us. I bet generators are selling out everywhere.

Good luck to everyone dealing with this storm as it moves across the country over the next several days.

All of the computer models are zeroing in on us getting 17 inches of snow from this weekend's storm. It is currently +8 F here and falling as of midnight as I post this, with the forecast low near near zero. One of the model runs that I saw hinted that our county will be dry-slotted by this storm, so hopefully it will keep our snow totals down to lower than the forecasted 17".

NJ and NY have both declared states of emergency, and NY has also mobilized the National Guard to assist with snow removal and other emergencies.

Temps through the end of next week will be in the teens for highs, and lows around zero. Reminder to anyone who does not normally deal with cold and snow that road salt doesn't work well at these temperatures, so whatever falls may be on the roads for a few days unless your plows/sanders have access to non-salt ice melters that work at lower temperatures.....

The 11 PM TV news out of NYC threw out the possibility of the B-word for coastal areas, which is defined as 35 MPH wind gusts and visibilities of less than 1/4 mile due to falling or blowing snow for three consecutive hours.....

I'm personally worried about the south and Texas from this storm, since they are getting a significant ice storm and don't have the winter road-clearing equipment that we do in the northern climates where it snows a lot.

Down yonder in South Carolina, they are calling for an inch of snow/sleet topped with up to 1/2 inch of ice. That's enough ice to snap tree limbs and knock down overhead utility wires, and they could be facing a week or more without electricity if that ice forecast proves out. Have I mentioned recently that my DW and I own a small tree farm down in SC?????

I had read that you both have a place in S Carolina also and am hoping it is in good order in the face of the storm. When we go away to our new place in N Hampshire (about 37 miles away to the West) I turn off the water supply as a precaution, the old place is up for sale and I pop back from time to time to check up on it, keep it clean and tidy for house viewers to see and to check up on my sister and some family friends who live nearby.

Well, Saturday is here and here's the weather...

Can't speak for all areas but for my area as storms go this one is not the storm-ageddon it was forecast to be.

The freezing precipitation -- sleet and freezing rain -- missed us (I'm not complaining) and the snow fall amount is so far not nearly as much as was forecast. Because it is so cold I was able to blow a lot of snow off the porch and walk and the Ridgeline with a battery powered leaf blower.

The temperature certainly lives up to -- or down to... -- its billing. Bitter cold.

More snow is forecast for today.

We are getting emails and texts from the City of Asheville and our building’s property manager about the ice storm expected in Asheville. While I’m glad we are in FL now, I hope the city is able to get throw this without a major impact as the people there still have not completely recovered from Helene. The water system in particular is a major concern.

Was just checking the maps as we have family in Hendersonville and we’re not far away in TN. This morning looks much better - less ice followed by warmer air, so rain tomorrow. Windy enough to damage trees if they are iced, so still risk to power lines overnight, but my guess is localized and not widespread outages.

All that said, the topography here is shaping the impacts as warmer air from the gulf comes up into the valleys and is held by the mountains. We’re at the northish end of a valley, may have enough elevation to ice and may be low enough to warm. Won’t know until morning. Same for Asheville and Hendersonville - where you are exactly could matter a lot.

Hoping for minimal impacts.

It seems the storm is pushed back a little on timing with it now looking to hit off this evening rather than lunch time. With all the forecasts I am seeing, it would seem to expect a minimum of half an inch of ice and as much as two inches (!!) of ice.

While we don't live on a bonafide tree farm, we are nothing but trees here at Chez Spazzyfry. I'd say 95%+ mature hardwood with a few pines sprinkled in. Really hoping this means they have some resilience to the ice, but I also know of several that have insects in. Hoping for the best. If it goes as the forecasting shows, not having power for a week is likely. In each instance that Mother Nature stepped in for an extended power outage, we have been the absolute last residence to be restored. The co-op does a fantastic job and provides outage maps to show who is being restored and all...each time with thousands out and we watch the outage number decrease, it isn't until we see single digits on the map that the utility trucks show up. As it has been explained to us, our power source is part of a "tap" and not off the main line. Further, this tap only supplies a couple mailboxes which are not a part of a paved road, never mind that we're actually off a private easement that is not in any way maintained by anyone other than yours truly. With the lows flirting with single digits over the next week, this is going to be a heck of an adventure!

Several years ago Connecticut suffered a rare ice storm in October. My inlaws live outside Hartford and had no electricity for over a week. Their house has natural gas, so they invested about $8k in a whole house generator. It works quite well during the monthly tests it runs, but they've never had to use it in all these years of owning it. This week may change that. Maybe they'll finally get the benefit of it. Although I'm sure they'd be just as happy if they don't need it.

It was not so much an ice storm, rather 14+ inches of the heaviest/ pastiest snow.. and it was Halloween so the trees still had plenty of leaf cover.. the weight of the snow on the trees snapped branches. The hardest hit was between Hartford and Springfield Ma. Further south was mostly sleet/rain.. Further north the trees had less leaves, and the snow was a bit drier. I was without power for over a week.

This storm will be in the upper teens ish... snow will be very fluffy, and winds not to bad. Knock on wood about loosing power.

My first ice experience was in Portland, OR, in 1978/9 winter. I recall over an inch of ice on the roads, sidewalks, etc. Power out for several days, 5 IIRC. And we lived in an all-electric apartment. Cooked soup on a camp stove, bundled up, used the car for heat every few hours. Wore golf shoes (spikes back in the day) to walk outside. Swore I’d never be dependent on one fuel source again.

Since then every house has had gas/electric, two had generators, one had a wood stove. Current house has propane but only for a grille and ventless fireplace that we don’t use. Our backup plan, not executed yet, is inverters/batteries with grid recharging and maybe solar recharging support for longer outages. Backup power is really expensive to do properly, especially whole-house. But outages are expensive and risky (to health and life) as well.

Our experience here so far is outages only last a few hours. Our Co-op does excellent restoration work, as most do. Long outages are a “tail” risk, but those are the ones that matter.

I feel very bad for those that will get hit with ice. Ice events are a normal occurrence in Kansas City and is largely why any new utilities installed after 1995 were put underground. It's such a pain to be without power for days on end. If a place gets 1/4"+ of ice and has aboveground residential power lines and lots of trees, it's going to be one week plus before power is restrored for the majority. If your home line gets damaged, damn, you're looking at a long time to fix. Been there.

Right now in Kansas City we've got a few inches of snow on the ground and will probably end up with 6 inches or so by tomorrow morning. The exciting part for us is that we didn't get ice first. That is a rarity. We usually get icey drizzle first then snow. Makes for very dangerous driving.

After the Holloween blizzard that M_six is referring to, I bought a nice Honda generator..9600 watts. Probably used it 4 hours in the years (15 ??) since that storm.. not counting firing it up to keep it in shape..

My new F150 powerboost has a built in 7200 W generator. On a full tank of gas, its supposed to last 3 days on 1/2 load.. Have not used yet.. has only 300 miles on it .
