This reminds me of the pictures of the VW/Audi diesel scandal cars that are just sitting out in the Mojave Desert graveyard with all the scrap jets.
What really floors me is that we, as a society, have labeled all those diesels as dirty and awful when in reality we could have come up with some sort of salvaged/conditional title program and traded them to people that are otherwise driving just as environmentally unfriendly (if not much more so) and definitely less safe older cars but cannot afford anything else. I was no fan of cash for clunkers, or generally anything similar, but in these types of cases where we just let things go to waste it seems so senseless. I remember an environmentalist once telling me the greenest car you can buy is a used one, because no new resources have to be spent building the car. I am by no means an ardent greenie, but it was an interesting and applicable take.

Halifax........................................... ...........Vancouver
Maybe I've missed it but Halifax is on Canada's east coast while Vancouver is on the west coast. Why were they transported 3600 miles?

Apparently it was a ~$40m insurance claim. And...my 2015 m235 is probably sitting there since mine was one of those "Halifax" recall cars!! Although...they told me it was going to be crushed. I guess not.

Also Mercedes got something similar: thousands of Mercedes cars stored on an airstrip in Ahlhorn near Bremen because of build quality defects. Apparently the cars were manufactured in Tuscaloosa (USA) and Mercedes blames contractors for the defects.

Why aren't they stripped for parts? The cost of getting someone to do that would no doubt outweigh the benefit/ resale value of them.
Besides, who'd buy a car seat or steering wheel etc knowing the history and the retailer is on the hook for issues later. |

maybe they will try to claim the whole damage back in court? Also strip for parts means inspection I suppose, you can sell other people for parts, but then BMW would worry about liability lawsuits?

BMW and the shipping vessels obviously have insurance that’ll cover all of this. There’s essentially no total loss. These cars will sit for a few more months then will be scrap metal. These cars only mean a lot to consumers not the manufacturers themselves. That’s the mind tricks.

well, did insurance really truly paid out, if that's the case unless BMW is fairly confident they can get more in court, would be better to spend the money and crush it then the storage cost

When you purchase a car, that $7XX-$12XX figure , the destination charge, goes to the shipping company. You pay for it. I’m certain a portion of that goes to some insurance in the event. Imagine how much money rolls in when people finalize deals and title cars without incident. The consumer pays for everything.

I don't doubt there is insurance and I certainly don't doubt I pay for some of it, just don't know what the exact term of the insurance is since this didn't happen at the sea (it was at port issue right?)

1. BMW doesn't give a shit if it's a $150k M6 sitting there. It's all numbers to them. They got most of the original costs back in the form of insurance payment, and then they were likely still able to fulfill the customer's original order, so they barely lost anything other than opportunity cost and any gaps in insurance payout versus true cost. 2. When talking about the scrapping business, it's much more economical to scrap than to strip. Especially when we're talking about parts that are questionable due to damage from salt water. Compounding the potential liability of selling damaged parts, it's much more economical to scrap than to strip. I'm guessing, each car has at least about $500-$2000 of scrap value. The metal is the most valuable part of the car. Typically, they drain all the fluids, and remove hazardous materials as required by law (mercury in the headlights, the battery, etc.), then they crush the car, move into into a machine that chews it up, and separates the metal from the other stuff. The metal gets picked up by a giant magnet and the other stuff goes into a landfill. A strip would require way too much time and effort. You need to find someone who'll buy it. That person then will strip and sell valuable parts (notwithstanding the liability issues). Then that person STILL has to scrap. But here's the thing....there's a ton of costs associated with this activity, the labor, the space, and the disposal, so ultimately, a stripper may not pay as much per car than a scrapper as there's no certainty of profit on every car. Even though I estimated each car is worth about $500-$2000, that's the net value per car. It costs money to dispose things into a landfill and to follow regulations to dispose or neutralize hazardous materials.

it happened at port. Whoever was the custodian of the cars at the time (could be port or shipping co) will have to make a claim against their insurance.

Titanium can rust but usually is a lot more durable than most other metals. I bet that exhaust is just a little dusty haha
