I'd love to drive a "normal" one just to see what it should feel like so I have a baseline. Don't think driving a dealership car would be a fair test.

For work I drive a soon to be replaced 2011 ford transit with over 100k that's had a very hard life and it's smoother at speed than my 6! My dealer has a 2013 640d coupe which i would be interested in test driving to compare.

I wonder if you guys might have ever so slightly bent axles or something equally extreme?
If you've effectively ruled out the tires and wheels, you're into something more serious. Having owned BMWs (each new) for the last two decades, I'm fairly comfortable saying it shouldn't be a design issue. I've only had my GC for a short while now, but it certainly doesn't exhibit any of these issues. However, my 550xi was a pothole magnet. The rims certainly got bent on various occasions and caused vibration at highway speed. Taking them to a good rim person could correct it ALMOST back to perfect, but it was never 100%. Depending how badly they've been bent in the past, it's been my experience that they may not be perfectly correctable. If you've ruled out the rims, looking at the drivetrain seems like the next place to inspect. I'm not sure what a previous owner would have had to do in order to bend an axle or cause some kind of similar damage, but I wouldn't rule it out.

Unlikely, next course of action is engine mounts, torque converter or worn suspension or cv joints. A bent axle wouldn't cause vibration at specific rpm even at standstill.

My car's going in soon to be looked at again, I've asked them to check out the mounts, torque converter, suspension etc. Also asked them to see what they can do about replacing the drivers seat covers on account of yours being done under warranty, my service adviser said he can't see it being a problem but is going to run it by the warranty department first, so thanks for the heads up about that!

Spoke to them yesterday and basically told them that I'll buy another car from them (looking at a pre reg 335d) if I get a full refund. Said he'll call me Wednesday as he has to clear it with the dealer manager due to it being a unique situation. I said after three attempts to fix it I'm not willing to go through the process of them throwing parts at it until it's fixed if it's fixed. Will update tomorrow once I know more.

640 to a 335 is quite a change! If not in power then in overall car! If you feel more comfortable doing that then do what you feel is right but it's a shame it came to that for sure.

I took the GC for a nice 2 hour long drive today - mainly just to get out because it was such a beautiful day, but I also wanted to try putting it through its paces given this thread.
I did a lot of highway runs, everything from 55mph to 85mph cruising, hill climbs, coasting, and everything in between. I also spent a lot of time on the backroads with roads of changing speeds (0 - 65mph), elevations (hills, both shallow and steep), etc. I specifically looked to push the car in all ways possible that would result in varying conditions at the 1500 - 2500 RPM ranges, which meant coasting/cruising in those ranges, hill climbs in those ranges, downshifting and upshifting in those ranges, etc. After what I believe is some very exhaustive testing, I can say without a shadow of a doubt, there was ZERO vibration of any kind. In fact, the only time I felt any vibration was when my fitbit buzzed to remind me I was sitting too long! I really tried to stress it in every situation and over a long duration to see if I could induce vibration, even just once. Nothing. The car was incredibly smooth, no odd transmission feel, road feel, etc. I even drove out of my way to find some newly paved roads to help factor out typical road imperfections that would mask mechanical vibration with the car. Again, nothing - it was buttery smooth. So, this isn't to say something isn't obviously seriously wrong with the cars that posters have been writing about here. I, like all of you, have no clue what may be up with those. BUT, I wanted to share this for the benefit of those would-be GC buyers out there. From the factory, brand spanking new, there's no sign of any vibration - the car feels and drives like every BMW I've ever owned (and then some!). Obviously anything can (and may) happen when you buy a pre-owned car; but, for those who are looking at buying a new GC, mine is at least one data point that suggests there's no from-the-factory defect or design flaw... or at least not one that manifests itself early in ownership! Looking forward to hearing what you guys find out.

Had many conversations with the dealer today and BMW FS. The dealer wants the car back Friday but iv got a feeling that they're going to be awkward about it. They want to inspect the car but they have already attempted 3 fixes within the first 30 days so I'm still a little unsure were I stand legally as the 30 days have now passed but the fault is still there. Iv emailed Bmw U.K. Costumer services to see what they think on the matter. I perhaps thought they might be willing to buy the car off me for what I payed and then purchase another car from them but alas it's not going to be that simple or civil. Will keep you posted

They'll do anything to not have to do that. If you were talking to BMW FS does that mean you have an agreement with them? If so that makes it doubly difficult. I suspect they'll want to fix it even if it takes multiple attempts but that's obviously not what you want. Hope you get it sorted one way or another

The manager of the workshop has taken it home for the weekend and he lives about 40 min away so hopefully after a few high speed runs they will confirm the issue. At least iv got a decent curtesy car this time (think they are creeping) 4 series.

So the dealer has confirmed there's an issue, no suppresses there! The 640d is going back to the dealer and they have found a brand new unregistered 435d GC with all the options I wanted and more. Car is over £51k list price but obviously I'm not paying anywhere near that although my monthly payment has gone up a little but I'm ok with this as I'm getting a brand new car. It's such a shame about the 640d as it is a beautiful car inside and out but iv lost confidence in it so a new car was the best way to go in my situation. The 435d is no 6 series but still a great car in my opinion! If you're interested (this being a 6er forum of course) I will post some picks up when I get it in a few weeks.
