X4???? Really? They are behind the game on the hybrid and EVs and they pick the X4 which isn't exactly burning up the sales charts (probably because I'm in the majority who think it's fugly)? I've been brand loyal buying only BMWs for almost 15 years but they seem to be working hard to break that loyalty.

It's funny teslas own marketing speaks to what it's design evolution is going to be.
Got the model "S" The model E but because ford owned it we got the model "3" but it's naming design keeps it to look like an E And the model "X" With the model "Y" coming later. Add them all together and you get "SEXY". Not bad Musk not bad..... I'll have my model 3 and i3 parked side by side in the garage sucking juice. |

Agree.
Still, strange they would specifically call out the X4 and not the X3. Would be sort of like doing an electric 4GC but not a 3 sedan. Actually, come to think of it, that wouldn't be such a bad idea if the purpose is to match up against the Tesla Model 3. Perhaps that's why an X4 - more evocative of the Model X. |

Don't tell me this is about reducing overheads! Merging departments and roles, only leads to 1 thing, a less focused company due to stretched resources and ultimately reduced quality product.
Does nobody understand how it works ffs! Invest in your people! Their skills, they make the company what it is, not the arseholes who sit on the board making stupid decisions based on watered down reports from junior management thru senior "management". And if someone says to me "BMW invest X hundred million" in their staff every year. I would say well if they can afford X why aren't they investing X + Y? All about the bottom line and I get that, just seems to me like we are heading towards normaldome, the Ford of the late 20th century. Volume sales!!! Well done the board who pushed the button on that one! |

In any case, the smaller Tesla SUV (called the Model Y as someone noted earlier) will reportedly be similar in aesthetic to the Model X, which again the X4 will more closely resemble than the X3. On that same note, I still think a future G2x 4GC could make a better foil to the Model 3 than the G20. |

Electric 3-series and MINI will be a good move. It'll be great to see more "normal" looking EVs instead of "futuristic" cars like the i3.
But why X4? Make a niche model out of an already niche model? The X3 would have much broader market appeal...

BMW never built an Electric Vehicle that the mass market wanted. Quite simply, that's the problem...
They built the i8 that a very few select people wanted... ...and they built the i3 that basically no one wanted. There were far too many other more attractive, less expensive, better performing options... (My wife and I drove a Chevy Volt since 2012 and the i3 would NOT have been an upgrade in any respect. We now drive a Model X.) Tesla's got the Model 3 on the way and they've already got over 400,000 paid reservations... Not bad for a car not even being produced for another year or so... Now Chevy has just introduced the new Bolt, with a 238 mile range at $37,500 (before $7,500 fed tax credit) and it goes on sale later this year... http://insideevs.com/chevrolet-bolt-...lectric-range/ 'cmon BMW! Really!

Not smoking. I believe this is where Europe and the US are headed. It could reverse course very quickly in the US if a Republican president is elected. When emission cutting starts to mess with peoples lifestyles voters just might revolt. As for NZ, I don't know enough about your country to make any predictions about electric utilities. If you have a lot of hydro, you are safer. The cars you buy are made elsewhere and if all what's available is crap, it's what you will have to buy. Long distance travel off the islands could become more expensive as international service availability and competition dry up.

When auto manufacturers start to produce automobiles (of any type) for the first time, they don't start with the Model T. They build on what other car manufacturers have already done. They take a look at the market to see what is already there and what they can do to compete. (Or at least they SHOULD...)
So no... BMW could have started with a better EV design. They simply produced a car (i3) which did not compete well in the market at any level...
