Everyone knows that BMW moved away from hydraulic blinkers a long time ago due to emission compliance

Does it need to be anointed by the M gods themselves for it to be christen a true M car? I get that you guys are trying to distinguish between the two variants but the pie has been cut so thin nowadays that separating M and M Performance is almost a pointless exercise, other than for the bragging rights. I'll be honest, I didn't think much of the M340i before I drove one but man, that car is a rocket, handles just as good as an M2 and is as M as it's really all one would need for regular road driving, with a little pep. The electronic 100% locking LSD was the crown-jewel of all M cars over the standard models but now that BMW has leveled the playing field and made them common amongst all, so I really don't see the advantage of an official M car anymore. |

I couldn't care less if regular 3 series owners get an M in front of their designation. Good for them if they care about badges. And good for BMW's pockets... If you have driven an M3 and an M340i, the difference is still night and day. Which is why this is purely for marketing and should make non-M owners feel better about their purchase. At the end of the day all of these cars are awesome.

And re-reading my entire post I clearly, and vehemently, contradicted the statement you've highlighted. In retrospect, I should have removed that statement as it doesn't fit the sentiment of the rest of my post, nor do I believe it. While I believe there are a lower number of true enthusiasts driving new BMWs versus old BMWs and there are some people who shop the max they can afford, it is unfair to make that blanket statement. Warren Buffet drives a late model Buick, I believe.

While I think this is quite dumb, some people choose to not get the real M car for a reason, I've owned e36/46 M3, the e92 m3 has always been an amazing looking, sounding and driving car to me. But when my 335 with a tune and down pipes is raping it I don't see the hype for me personally, I want a balance. Since we don't have a track. But I like to screw around, and partake in the occasional 1/2 mile race where every E9x performs subpar, even supercharged ones couldn't quite keep up with me.
When I was looking again, the F80 crossed my path many many times, everything about it screamed out to me. Except the exhaust note, I've heard several stock and aftermarket exhausts on them, and sadly I found them all awful, so I stuck with my e93 dct 335is, and then had a 435 for winter/daily. When I was looking again a few months ago I again looked at f80/f82, but again couldn't find an exhaust note that I felt I could live with especially with the price so ultimately I ended up with an m340, the new tech and awd sold me on it. And the power potential mixed with total savings, I also did rear wheel drive higher powered, turbo cars for 9 or so years. Now I enjoy being able to jump in and go anywhere I want, with zero struggles at all with certain roads or conditions here, as we get stupid winters here in Alberta. They should have kept it separate but it makes them money so they don't care. The next few years I do plan to have an M5 competition, but that wasn't in my cards this time around with a new business and young family. My .02 |

I love the M340 great car but it's not a real M car. Doesn't come out of M division. I do enjoy the comments when people say wow that's an M340 or C43 AMG those are real M and AMG models, No they aren't. Great cars just not M or AMG.

And let me tell you, M parts aren't that great bud. All my friends with M4's and deep pockets get Brembo BBK's, upgraded sway bars and K2v3 coilovers, and I'm not even talking about upgrades engine parts. |

It's something BMW has done in the past...
E12 M535i E24 M635csi E28 M535i (didn't have an M engine) Kinda cool, it just seems weird with the SUV's.

When I had my car in Florida where everything was flat and straight, I'd buy into your philosophy. But it would have been guided by my personal scenario and not the engineer's intent. I brought the car to California, I have no intention of drag racing people on the highway. I spend most of my time flying through the canyons or some winding mountain pass, by myself, at 6AM on a Sunday morning. My goal is to avoid traffic and other drivers all together. If I saw the hype in spanking people in a half mile straight line I'd simply buy a Tesla, or even build a rust bucket Fox Body mustang and make people look like fools with a $7,500 shitbox. I don't believe this car "underperforms" in a straight line. It performs well enough for something it wasn't engineered for.

A new M340 is faster and more capable than my old E92 M3. Does that mean my M3 is no longer a real M car because it doesn't have true M Performance by modern standards? I'm sure you'll answer no. So then what makes the M340 NOT an M car? It has real M Performance. The new M3 will of course be even more solid and stable and fast, but you don't need it everyday. You might use 50% of the car's performance on your commute, and that's only for a few seconds at a time. At normal speeds, it feels like...a BMW. And if you're gonna use it like a normal BMW most of the time, why not get a normal BMW?
