windscreen washer issues
hi all,
had a quick search but couldn't find anything, has anyone had issues with the windscreen washer system, when I pull the stalk back to clear the windscreen it feels like there is hardly any pressure coming out and the fluid only reaches the bottom of the windscreen. it used to cover the whole windscreen so wandering if the pump is on its way out. any help is muchly appreciated

Check the jets to make sure they aren’t clogged. Use a straight pin or sewing needle to check for crud in the jet nozzles.

Something else that seems to be common is having a clogged system when using off-brand fluid.
I personally have only run the genuine BMW fluid or the Rain-X branded fluid. But a friend of mine had issues on two of his BMWs clogging up when using another brand. I’ve also seen this issue discussed online before and most people say that if you use the BMW branded fluid you won’t have any issues. Not sure what kind of magic ingredient BMW puts in theirs, but some people swear by it. |

Silicon free washer fluid. That is what BMW recommends (it’s probably in the owners manual).
This is especially important for the newer BMWs that have the capacitive washer fluid level sensor.

Q beat me to it. Absolutely this. Read up a bunch when I first purchased. Just buy the cheap blue stuff it’s best. No fancy additives, no bug crap. Reason I was reading up on it: on my 2000 mile drive home I kept getting low washer fluid. Do keep an eyeball under the hood. The flapper top on the washer fluid tank has a mind of its own. They’ve been known to fail even though they appear to be secure. If you’ve got residue on the underside of your hood, this is what’s happening. I had to replace my flapper top. Problem solved.
