I just switched from a 535 to a 6 GC. I've never had a complaint about back seat space in either vehicle. That said, I probably wouldn't want to sit in the back of a GC for a road trip... |

I've never had anyone even hint that my F10 hasn't enough legroom in the rear. I would have thought the 6GC, being based on the F10, would have had similar room, but it doesn't. Just goes to show you how one basic chassis can yield very different results when it comes to final execution. All the best.

Can someone explain why the 4 (formerly 3 coupe) has more backseat than the 6? I don't really mind because I don't like taking people in the backseat anyway, but I just don't understand how this happens. Other than looks, where do we see and feel the bigger size of the 6 series? The trunk?

I doubt you'll get a better answer than "because BMW built it that way." But because it's built that way, short of boxes of tissue, a purse and assorted small acquisitions, little fits back there. It's also awkward to even get dry cleaning in and out from back there if one has more than just a few items. I can speculate, and doing so I will offer the following:
Is the trunk actually larger? I don't know. I didn't get so far into comparing the two that trunk size came into the equation. Which "this" is it that you don't understand how it happens? That the 6 has less space in the back seat or how folks end up having to drive with more than one passenger. All the best.

Trunk is a joke on the 6. The trunk's shallow opening makes its nice depth useless. I have trouble stuffing long boxes because of the shallow/small opening. For me, the biggest obvious thing on the 6 is the hood. Claying the damn thing takes forver... |

Useless Back Seat
The reason why the bigger 6 had less back seat room then the smaller 2 or 4, is BMWs attempt to make the 6 a performance car. By moving the engine closer to the middle of the car ("mid-engine"), they can give the car better handling. So the room that is not there in the back seat, is empty space in the engine compartment. I traded in a 3 convertible for a 6, and the handling difference is very noticeable. So I use my back seat for packages only.

Most of the handling improvements are from the lower center of gravity, which is primarily from seats that are lower to the ground. Since the seats are lower, your legs stick out more forward, so the seats (front) had to move back for enough room. Simple enough. The Grand Touring comments are spot on though, this is a car designed for a max of 2 people 95% of the time. |

I'm sure someone else here is old enough to remember that car. I do. There wasn't nearly as much room in the backs of most of those kinds of cars ("personal luxury" cars I think is the moniker that was used for them). A lot of folks "dissed" them because they were huge and yet still had no space inside. If ever there were a car that was mostly just big and showy for the sake of being big and showy, personal luxury cars were one such type of car. All the best.

I remember them well. The gas gauge needle moved faster than the speedometer needle.

Funny, but sadly true too. I know the younger folks might think you and I are exaggerating, but we aren't. I remember Dad's Buick Electra. I quite distinctly recall flooring the gas one time driving around the DC Beltway (I was 16) and the gas needle did actually move right before my eyes as the speedo crept it's way slowly 70, 75, 80, 85, 90....that's when I noticed the gas gauge moving and I slowed down. From then on, I drove quite gingerly with that car. I was 16 and Dad knew quite well that if I drove like a bat out of hell, I wouldn't have money to refill the gas tank to get back home. My parents never gave me the car with more than enough to get to the closest gas station and put in however much gas they'd given me money for, along with the money they'd given me to to spend at my destination. The gas money was always just enough to cover the round trip I told them I was making. I did exactly the same thing with my own kids. It's amazing how much becoming a parent puts one's own parents in a whole new light.... All the best.

Backseats in the F13 are good for briefcases, a bag of groceries, or the mail. For carrying people, they are every bit as useful as those in the 911.

Moving from a Z4 to a 6 - loads more room behind the driver / passenger seats. Only for very short journeys or a small infant!

The best thing one could do with the backseat in the F12/13 is fold it down for cargo. Wonder why they didn't do that?

Maybe not enough space to lay the back of the seat flat?
