Active Sound Module on 6-series
Love that throaty V6 warble on your 640i/640d Coupe, Convertible, GranCoupe
Apparently its down to a piece of technology playing over the car stereo! From other forums, I have heard that Part 65129289971 (Control unit with Active Sound Design) was found on the following vehicles: F01N: Details on F01N F01N 750dX Sedan, Europe F02N: Details on F02N F02N 750LdX Sedan, Europe F06: Details on F06 F06 640d Gran Coupé, Europe F10: Details on F10 F10 M5 Sedan, USA F10 M5 Sedan, Europe F10 M550dX Sedan, Europe F11: Details on F11 F11 M550dX Touring, Europe F12: Details on F12 F12 M6 Convertible, USA F12 640d Convertible, Europe F12 640dX Convertible, Europe F12 M6 Convertible, Europe F13: Details on F13 F13 M6 Coupe, USA F13 640d Coupe, Europe F13 640dX Coupe, Europe F13 M6 Coupe, Europe F20: Details on F20 F20 M135i 5 doors, Europe F20 M135iX 5 doors, Europe F21: Details on F21 F21 M135i 3 doors, Europe F21 M135iX 3 doors, Europe |

To be perfectly honest, you couldn't tell on the 640d - it has been done so seamlessly and is very convincing. Lovely little V6 warble.
That the 640d then achieves under 150gm/km CO2 and VED of £135/year is absolutely astonishing - not to mention the impressive fuel economy when compared to other cars of this weight/class - particularly the woeful Jaguar XJ and Audi A7 that are left for plain dead. But nothing sounds as god as a Maserati on the over burn. Hehe |

Hi. I test drove the 640d GC and the M550d yesterday and boy do they sound good!! the 640d more discrete and the M550d a true sports sound. I don't care if it's from the speakers, it's so well made no one could tell. If this item gets retofittable in the future i'll be the first in line with my 535d.

I would agree entirely.
Nothing takes away from the real thing - and i suppose some enthusiasts will want that. But if you can get the same sound with a cleaner burning engine that gives lower emissions, better mileage, and is every bit as responsive; I think its a no-brainer especially as the sound is very good and entirely aligned to how hard you're accelerating, slowing etc. AR |

My biggest problem is that I drive a stick, and shift by sound and feel. If I can't hear the real engine, then that just doesn't work for me. And for the record, I often turn off the radio, and forget to turn it on for months... |

I can honestly say I have never driven my BMWs with the windows open. Partly because BMWs - even the fun M-cars - dont really have the sound I absolutely love.
My other car is a Maserati GTS so I put my money where my mouth is. You have got to try it before you diss it, that active module is surprisingly good that most will never even know its there. Perfect sync with engine and throttle response. |

That's exactly my point- you're hearing, and being amused by, a fabrication. Which is fine, if it works for you. As I said in the more important part of my post, I shift by ear a lot, and wouldn't want the artificial layer added.

I hate this new feature on all new cars. I want to hear the natural sound of the engine not some fake sound fx coming from the car stereo no matter how subtle it might be.

It would be better if the sound coming from the speakers were real engine/exhaust sounds.
Instead they are pre-recorded sounds programmed to match throtle responses. I just don't like the thought of it. |

Might be an idea to test drive a car with one in it, and you may realise you cannot tell the difference (and the sound is so authentic!)

Haha. I think the autos are pretty great, but I'm a whipper snapper from the Play Station generation. I'm glad that BMW still offers the sticks for those who want them (for now anyway). I think it drives home the "Ultimate Driving Machine" thing, which I like in theory while I have my auto box with paddle shifters that appeal to my Nintendo-bred tendencies lol.

It's not a DCT, but it's very good!
