I'm not that familiar with that V10 but what I've read you should change some crank shaft bearings round 60 000 miles/ 100 km. mostly because the original setting is too 'tight'.

I have owned 2 E63 over the last few years, the last one for almost 7 yrs, could not bring myself to sell it, in the end it was a pain in ass despite that V10, constant electrical issues, SMG, Vanos, I Drive etc, etc, etc, it had only done 20k miles so the bearing issue was yet to come.
Traded to the new M6, totally usable daily driver, decent gas and will not break, you can pick up a good one for a reasonable price nowadays. Here is my 1st E63 at time of collection c2006 |

There were some design elements I liked on the E63, but many more I found odd. The Bangle years were a dark age for BMW.
I get the allure of a good NA V10, as well, but this one was unfortunately a problem child. Personally, I'd stay away from it. And that's a shame - had BMW gotten this engine right AND put it in a car with the looks of the F-series 6... that would have been a dream. As much as I like the power that the turbo-charged engines produce, nearly everything else is not great: muffled sound, more heat, non-linear power delivery, etc. The NA I6 I had in my E46... what a buttery, wonderful engine - it seemed to only get better with age. I put 125k miles on it before moving on.

Go for it
I have an '07 E63 Coupe and it has been a blast! It rotates duty between an old FJ62 Land Cruiser as my daily driver and I love it.
The acceleration, the top end, that soooound, it's been the perfect car. True there have been some issues but there's always issues - ABS, alternator, and clutch. I have one of the few manual 6-speeds and I've just tripped 100k miles and the engine is top notch: no bearing issues or signs of bearing issues and I get my oil tested during each service. I personally know five other M6 drivers with the same car and none (2 of 5) of the manual transmission cars have manifested the engine issue, but it seems to be 100% (the remaining 3 of 5) for the paddle cars have, if that means anything. Go for it if you want one - I'm never getting rid of mine! |
