Unfortunately, they misunderstood. No new 4 Series ICE planned yet. And if it does get approved, we're talking 3-5 years to launch.

But good news either way. More choices for customers is always a plus.
I might even wait for the ZA2 M4 instead of the M3.
There are still no plans

Okay, now I understand. There will be no next generation of the 4 series and no next generation of the ICE M4. There will only be the electric i4 and something resembling the M4, but ONLY electric.

The M4 is not selling well. Customers are choosing the M3 Touring over the M4 Coupé. Ultimately, the M4 will be discontinued, just like the M8 Coupé and the Z4.

BMW, or rather its owners, care about profits, so they will continue to produce new versions of SUVs and Touring models because those are the only ones that sell, not Coupé or Convertible models.
There is a chance BMW M keeps the G82 platform going without having a 4 SERIES Coupe counterpart. But nothing approved yet. Lots of discussions about the future and what it would look like

Would it be a g82 “super lci” or would it incorporate whatever updates getting baked g50/g84, which maybe is just a super lci itself….

Let's be serious. Two years ago, the LCI for the 4 Series was unveiled. Normally, at this point, we would see the next generation of the 4 Series under wraps. This is exactly the same situation as with the 8 Series and Z4. BMW does not plan to launch a new 4 Series and M4.
They will only extend the production of the old generation by a year after modifying the engine to meet the EURO7 emission standards, which means it will have less power and be heavier.
Perhaps in the future, only the 4 Series will be produced as an electric car as a waste product when the electric 3 Series is introduced.

This is nothing new, but again, when the decision of no next ICE 4 Series was made, the world looked different. I still think at some point in the future the 4 Series will return, but it might be a model gap until then.

A coupé 4er EV sounds exciting. But that render... it's spiceless. No bite.

This is how combustion engines changed after 2035, but the new regulations will still be deadly for combustion engines - EURO8 – a 90% reduction in CO2 compared to EURO6.
In any case, until recently, BMW had a comparable offer to its main competitor - Mercedes.

Mercedes SL Roadster / AMG - BMW 8 Series Convertible / BMW M8 Convertible

Mercedes GT Coupe / AMG - BMW 8 Series Coupe / BMW M8 Coupe

Mercedes GT4 / AMG - BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe / BMW M8 Gran Coupe

Mercedes CLE Coupe / AMG - BMW 4 Series Coupe / BMW M4 Coupe

No comparable Mercedes model - BMW Z4

Currently, this has changed significantly, and BMW only has the 4 Series, which will soon be discontinued. Only the budget 2 Series will remain, which is unable to compete with any of the more expensive Mercedes models.

Something my dealer said last month caught me a little by surprise regarding the 8 Series specifically. I guess someone there has it on good authority that once they get done with these special edition 850's, the 8 badge is going back on the shelf in favor of resurrecting the 6 again. I know this info has been rumored for a while but it sounds like this is more than just online auto rag gossip.

Beyond that, I have a feeling the 4 is going to trail the new gen 3 by at least a year if not more which wouldn't be at all surprising based on previous generation launches. What's going to be interesting is seeing how they respond to market demand when the new M3 drops to dealer order lists. Seeing the data on power train preference from actual customers is gonna play a major role in how they decide to roll out the new 4 and M4 whenever it breaks cover.

I don't know about the 6 coming back, but I thought it was official that the 8 was being discontinued, no?

I thought I heard they were getting rid of the 8 to go back to 6. I thought that might make sense as they do 2 generations of 6 series and then one generation of 8 series throughout time.

It looks like I was mistaken completely because I thought they were going to do the same with the 3 and 4 series, and go back to M3 coupes and convertibles for this generation or so and then reintroduce the 4 series again in another generation.

I also heard once that the 6 series was supposed to replace the 8 series, but that's no longer the case. The next generation of the 8 series was supposed to be released. It even has the designations G75/G76/G77/G93, 8 series coupe, convertible, GC. But it was canceled and postponed until the next decade, i.e. after 2030.

For now, they are going to produce the current 8 series and Z4 until April/May, but in small quantities.

You're right about the 4 Series. They'll see how the new generation G50 and M3 sell and then decide what to do with the 4 Series. Here in Europe, the M3 Touring sells better than the M4 Coupe or M4 Convertible. Similarly, the M5 Touring sells better than the M5 Sedan.

There are no plans currently for an ICE 4 Series and X4. What you described with these codes is the electric version of M4 Coupe and M3 Touring.

you're close with the new M2, but still not set in stone. There are discussions around multiple models as we speak with some decisions being reconsidered in a positive way.

@hb don’t you mean M4 Coupe and M4 Convertible? M3 Touring is ZA1 not ZA2 or ZA3.
