Spied: First Non-Black 2012 BMW M6
BIMMERPOST NEWS First Non-Black 2012 BMW M6 Spied Surprisingly, despite the slew of M6 spy photos we've brought you since the first sightings last year, not a single prototype has been in a color other than black. But, that's no longer the case as this space gray F12 M6 convertible was just spied on the streets of Munich. The camouflage level remains the same as recent M6 convertible mules, with the front and rear fascia still mostly masked, but, as we've discussed previously -- the details on the rear bumper can be made out through the tape, and appears to follow the current M trademark design, which is similar to the rear bumper on the 1M and X3 M Sport. It is still not known if the centerpiece would be black as on the 1M or painted as on the M5. Power will come via the S63Tu Twin Turbo 4.4L V8 that powers that F10 M5 which is good for 560HP and 501ft-lb of torque. Expect to see the car revealed in full sometime in calendar year 2012. I am still having a hard time liking this car...I went by my local dealership this weekend and looked at a few new 6s, and am just not sold on the design - it's incredibly loooong, and a little boring to me. I also am amazed that a car that breaks the $100k barrier still has a cloth top. Seems cheap, and the "ribs" break up the sweeping lines of the car.
I know there are lovers of this car, and I'm not trying to start anything. Just adding my 2 cents. |

It's a beautiful design, but just too big.

Looks as poor as the last one. When I see a 1973 3.0cs or an 8 series I stare and say: what a fantastic design = timeless. This new 6 is just a rework of the old one. C'mon BMW I have owned your cars for the last 35 years. I want your coupes to be more personal sized, not a barge. Someone posted a photoshop rendering of the new 5 series as a coupe and it looked great. Let's get some style back into play!

I guess I just don't see that; a convertible Geos had a soft top, but I don't think that fact made them more classy. The soft top will also likely be noisier than a hard top, and limits the top speed below what a hard top could accomplish.
There have been a lot of classy GT cars with a hard top...the MGB-GT, by comparison (while not a $100k+ car or convertible) was absolutely classy...and a classic. Ditto for the Shelby Mustang GT. I could go on...I guess I just think a $100k car should try to set itself apart from the crowd as much as possible, and a cloth top doesn't get it done (in addition to limiting performance). As for making the car heavier...this car is reported to pull more than 560 horsepower...560. Even if the hard top was to weigh 350 pounds, that's still less than .63 pounds (10 ounces) per horsey. If they were concerned about weight, why not shave off about a foot of length? |
